Gates from Above

gates_ikonos.jpgWhoa, the Weather Service is getting very specific on us for this afternoon:

A slight chance of showers between 1pm and 2pm, then a chance of showers and thunderstorms between 2pm and 3pm, then showers likely and possibly a thunderstorm between 3pm and 5pm, then a chance of showers and thunderstorms after 5pm. Increasing clouds, with a high around 57. South wind 11 to 15 mph becoming west. Chance of precipitation is 70%. New rainfall amounts between a quarter and half of an inch possible.

The forecast is from the new National Digital Forecast Database, which produces all sorts of nifty forecast products for weather geeks and normal people alike. Oh, yes, we'll have some winter chill for a few days after the front passes today.

In case you're totally tired of The Gates, Gothamist would like to suggest a different view. The NASA Earth Observatory is featuring an Ikonos satellite image of Central Park taken last Saturday. We especially like the full image (Note: 2.5 MB) that shows the entire park. Judging from the shadows, Gothamist is in this photo. See if you can spot us!

  • I wonder if all the panels were unfurled yet? I would have thought that the orange would have shown up more brilliantly -- in some sections it's quite bright, and in others I can just see the outlines of the frames. I hope they take more shots like this through the installation!
