Will Selling Spray Paint Be Banned?

am New York reports that the City Council will discuss banning the sale of spray paint, to continue efforts to deter the spread of graffiti. The City Council wants its time in the sun, ever since the Mayor announced his anti-graf plan. Of course, this might affect people with legitimate uses for spray paint, but City Councilman Peter Vallone thinks the "benefit of less graffit outweighs the inconvenience of taking a trip outside the city to buy paint." Wait a minute. If Gothamist is working on our Trading Spaces inspired home improvement projects, you know, the kind that look good only if you're drunk or out of your mind, we won't be able to buy spray paint to turn that old nightstand into something worse? Say! Twenty bucks the proposal doesn't go anywhere - construction workers unions will complain.

NY magazine has a feature on the Graffiti Habitual Offender Suppression Team, aka GHOST. It's a goldmine of information, including how German tourists cut "precise holes" to attempt to tag subway cars and the arrest of a 17 year-old who stencils ducks and pandas!

yeah, that's so not going to happen.

it seems funny that mayor mike's argument for allowing walmart to invade the city is that we are losing tax dollars as people leave nyc to buy stuff at walmarts elsewhere. that seems to fly in the face of this idea. i think walmart destroys communities with a broader stroke than spray paint ever could.

I have heard that this is almost the case in Sweden already. People get arrested when bying spray cans in paint shops. arrgh.

user-pic

I don't think graffiti destroys 'commmunities', but it's pretty annoying and on par with our roach/rodent problem. Walmart is a completely different issue

Another gem of an assinine idea.

user-pic

just another reason to go to nj. besides, most writers rack paint in bulk whenever they get the chance...in the city or outside of it.

As someone who's studied "blight" extensively for the last couple years, I have to say that I can name a number of more important issues (than graffiti) to spend our time and effort on. I happen to know that there are some buildings in Williamsburg that are pretty dirty and well-tagged, and no normal people can afford to live in them. Maybe we should be thinking about, say, child poverty, affordable housing, infrastructure investment? Come on, City Council.

we should try to pass a law banning stupidity. that would work.

sorry i wasn't being clear b, the walmart comment was just a comparison. i was trying to illustrate the contradiction in reasoning for banning certain retail activities over concern for losing tax revenue.

if we ban walmart, we lose tax revenue.
if we ban paint, we lose tax revenue.

one of the primary reasons for banning either of them would be their effect on the community.

seperate issues, yes... but, if passed, the reasoning would nevertheless be contradictory.

Yeah. Great idea. Let's ban the sale of spray paint. That will work. Let's ban the sale of decoupage gear first so no more people have to be exposed to their friends pasting crap onto other crap first.

Seriously, I am in complete agreement with "nash". People lash out against graffiti because it's visible and an easy target. But there are tons of other issues this city chooses to ignore or is outright ignorant about.

The problematic graffiti will end once you give the lazy toys out there something to do. The pros who do permission pieces and such should be left alone.

Spray paint: illegal. Guns: legal.

And what about paint pens?

user-pic

last i checked, it was illegal to own a handgun or buy one in NYC

user-pic

First they came for the smokers, and I did nothing.
Then, they came for the bicycle riders, and I did nothing.
Then, they came for the spray paint....
You get the idea.
PS- guns are not illegal, just hard to get the permitting for em.
When spray paint is made illegal, only Fab decorators will have spray paint!

Spraypaint doesn't cause graffiti. People cause graffiti. Stop the madness.

The problem with a law banning stupidity is the stupid people would have to pass it. Of course, because they are stupid, they could be fooled into passing it and thus outlaw themselves... um... uh...

Sam Beckett for City Council!

Banning spray paint to prevent graffiti is like banning dancing to prevent sex.

user-pic

How's that subway photo ban working out?

user-pic

Let them ban spray paint, people will order it online. Or else they will go else where to buy it. Maybe city council should think about their ideas, and maybe discuss them before sharing them. And maybe then, they won't look like idiots.

user-pic

OK YEA lets ban spraypaint....

do you think that will stop graffiti artists from getting it...
no
it will make it more a problome because people will want more of the risk of getting it from other places

oh and wile your at it lets ban eggs because people throw them at cars..

also lets ban Milk because it goes bad when you leave it out

lets ban cars because people can kill others with cars....

why dont you guys think of other more important issues like weapons of mass distruction or even child porn

i dont care

HAhaha how many more fascist laws are they gonna throw at society? How many more camaera are they gonna put up so they can 'watch us'. LOL These pricks sure like their little New Whirl Odor.

Smells to me like another law to take away the rights of those in society. Fucking fascist dictator scum. Do you think the world is gonna tolerate one douche bag when there are millions of people who oppose. Loosers. Quit masterbating with tax payer money, and make your own speeches illegal.

Pendejos!
