Subway to Deadwood

After inserting a DVD of an episode in the NY Times magazine a week or so ago, HBO is continuing the full court to press to convince people that period teeth and questionable hygiene in the Wild West are worth watching (and there's some stuff about good and evil). A shuttle train between Times Square and Grand Central will be decorated with "fake wood, tiles and even faux cushions to look like western-saloon train cars," in honor of Deadwood. Message from HBO: The Sopranos will have its final season at some point in the next five years...Six Feet Under is ending...Sex and the City is gone...please watch us! But Gothamist is sure that faux cushions will be welcome on the S train. We took the S between Times Square and Grand Central for almost two years, and it's one of the most miserable subway experiences possible. Since the S only has 3 or 4 cars per track, it's a dogfight trying to board one during rush hour.

New Line Cinema (owned by HBO parent company Time Warner) decorated an S train to celebrate the DVD release of The Lord of the Rings two years ago. And in the current double issue of The New Yorker, there's an interview with Deadwood creator David Milch; since it's the NYer, it's not online. And do you watch Deadwood?

The S shuttle between Grand Central Station and Times Square always confounded me. Since the platform is on the far west side of Grand Central and the far east side of Times Square, I always felt the short train would enter a tunnel about the length of the train, shutter and rattle for 30 seconds, and then come out the other end. In other words, barely worth the effort of using it.

No wonder that in fair weather during rush hour you'll see a masses people walking west along 42nd Street, which -- until Giuliani & Disney & Co. decided to raise the real estate values -- I felt was a primary factor why the blocks of 42nd Street between Sixth and Eighth Avenues were lined with porn stores.

Deadwood is the best show on television. It's also HBO's best bet for a long-running hit, too, and they know it. Unfortunately, it was overshadowed in its first season by The Sopranos--bad move, HBO. They should have given it its own 9pm slot from the beginning, especially if it could have spared us 12 more weeks of the loathsome Carnivale.

But, I think it will catch on big with Season 2. It's never going to be the smash that The Sopranos was (although it's a better show), because it's a little too esoteric for some, way too coarse and violent for others. But it's gaining a huge cult following. I think it's gonna be similar to Six Feet Under, in that it will develop a sizable and loyal following, but won't reach the popularity of Sex and the City or Sopranos./

Excellent show. Really stands up against The Sopranos considering story, depth of characters, writing. It IS violent. Small cute white children for instance are not spared when caught running a scam. But it's realistic nonetheless and due to the prodigious use of the word 'cocksucker', it has potential to be the best drinking game show ever.

excellent show. unlike above posters, i also like carnivale but i think all the period shows run their course over 3 years.

Deadwood (along with The Wire) is the best show HBO (or maybe anyone) has put on TV. As mentioned above, no characters are spared, language is both accurate and coarse, and it has drama that goes beyond just being a "period piece." The main charcter's laconic demeanor and seething anger, are like watching a ticking bomb in a modern thriller, only with real emotional meaning. It's also, in setting, history, and broad character strokes, a true story. The only problem is that watching it, you begin to imagine the smells of the scenes, and it ain't pretty.

I was going to be a total nerd and complain about y'all being too lazy to do color correction on the subway photo. Then I realized it's meant to be all greenish looking, not because of the fluorescent lights.

Good thing I caught myself before making an ass out of myself.

Oh yeah, I watch it. Deadwood is one of the best shows on TV. I can't wait for the new season.

Lord god a mercy, just watched Deadwood on DVD.

They should have started with the 6th disk, to introduce the show.

No matter. Good stuff.
