...Like the Weather

accuwx_wv0215.jpgWhy did Gothamist grab a winter coat as we left our apartment this morning? It is going to be in the mid- to upper-50s. What were we thinking? Truth is we were preoccupied. Not by thoughts of rain tomorrow. Nor were we thinking that winter might make a brief return next week.

No, Gothamist was too busy singing along with our favorite weather songs. Acme.com has posted mp3's from Tom Glazer's Weather Songs LP. The songs were written by Hy Zaret and Lou Singer in the 1950s as part of a series of science song albums. The They Might be Giants cover of "The Sun is a Mass of Incandescent Gas" being their best known song. But why listen to weather songs written by folk musicians when you can listen to weather songs written by a meteorologist? Check out these weather tunes from the National Weather Service's El Paso office (note: the songs were written and recorded on the meteorologists own time, not your taxpayer dollars). The Weather Channel's Nick Walker, aka the Weather Dude, has also recorded a selection of weather songs for children. And don't forget Gothamist's interview with Steve Hurst, Weather Channel DJ.

What are your favorite weather songs?
