In a 5/7/5 haiku, what makes New York the best city in the world?
Diversity, love
Ask a New Yorker dot com
Open and gracious
What made you start AskANewYorker.com?
When you ask “What” made me start it, I guess it helps to know “When”. I started it when the dot-com bubble burst, when that world was sinking. I wanted to do something on the internet and picked up a bunch of domain names, like AskaRockstar.com, AskaMoviestar.com....www.walloflove.com...big deal. Then one sunny day I was standing at Union Square taking in all the energy, the people at the farmer’s market and asked myself what has real value, and “Ask a New Yorker” came to me. It made perfect sense, and it was available! The rest is history.
What's the inspiration or "lightbulb" moment that motivated you to start building coconut lamps? Where can people purchase your lamps?
The coconut lamp is just one of many creations I made when I was living in Hawaii. What can I say? I love creating. “Laughing Fish with Hole” was one of my favorites, which was a sculpture I stuck out in the ocean in front of our home at the base of Diamond Head. It became rather well known to surfers as a tide meter. It was a little dangerous, and almost impaled a few surfers but they grew to like it mostly because it was impossible to move. Anyways, I made about 50 coconut lamps and sold them. So if anyone is interested in buying one, ten, contact me at Kennedy@AskaNewYorker.com. They’re made to order. The height can vary, depending on how many nuts you want (20 is the average). I made one for the Hard Rock Cafe in Honolulu with 60 coconuts.
What's the best improvement to New York in the past year?
The improvements that have been made to New York magazine. A wonderful transformation. The layout and stories have improved immensely. The recent issue with Martha Stewart on the front had a story: “How far would you go for a piece of real estate?” Insane story,I loved it!
What's the most unusual thing that you smuggled into bar or club in New York?
Myself, then got the boot shortly thereafter.
It's Sunday morning; do you attempt the New York Times crossword, go for a jog or nurse a hangover?
I go for a jog to nurse a hang over. Actually, I wake up and grab the New York Times, then make bacon and French toast for my sweetheart.
How many take-out menus do you have in your apartment?
Zero.
What's your favorite subway stop?
Union Square. I love all the possible exits, and outside there is the green market where I spend lots of time in the spring picking out my flowers for the summer.
If you could have a New York City neighborhood renamed after you which one would it be?
I'm quite happy with the names already given. My name really doesn’t lend itself to an entire neighborhood, but maybe a street. Come to think of it, there is a Moore Street already.
You've been asked to host a party and the only requirement is that you must invite three New York celebrities (alive), who would you extend an invite to?
Dan Doctoroff, Jerry Seinfeld, & Sean “P Diddy” Combs. Can I invite a fourth? How about Hillary Swank? Thank you.
What's the best place in New York for semi-public sex?
So you mean the public can kind of see you but not entirely? At the MoMA, ground floor, left hand corner, behind one of those interesting installations.
Complete this non-SAT analogy: "Page Six" is to Gossip as Kennedy Moore is to _______ Gardening.
