The Gates Are Open

gates.jpg

It's a saffron-palooza up in Central Park right now, because Christo and Jean-Claude's Gates are finally open! Track the fun all weekend using Flickr's tags: gates, thegates, christo, centralpark. And if you've been up to the park to photograph, add your trackback to this post! [Related: the New York Times gets into the act, with an editorial, a whole section about the Gates, and a great map. And of course, The NYC Gates Blog is live-blogging the entire opening day.]

And an encounter with the artists

Are The Gate People really moonies?

At the Flaneur File.

Here's one. I'm going to try to put up a picture a day.

here are some photos i took today: a little bit of orange, but mostly black and white :)

I'm selling gates at 1 for a $100 and 4 for $300. You must pick them up at night and pay in cash.

Hope you like orange, more photos here http://www.gregbrophy.com/gates I feel like I am back at Syracuse

This really is becoming the most photographed event ever.

And are the Grey Vested ones really moonies on loan?

50 Million Christo Fans Can't be Wrong.

Just posted my photos above. I love them, just like everyone else in the whole world.

HI: I've posted photos and my post has a set of links (including NPR interviews.

In case anyone is randomly selecting photo posts from the exhausting list above, here are mine:

I like to think they're pretty good.

Hey, I don't know why my link didn't work above, but here are my pics again.

I really hate the Gates. The best part about it is that it will end quickly and be forgotten (when was the last time you talked about last year's fire works display?). I use the park almost daily and feel that this "Art" project is unwelcome and intrusive. There a lot of better ways to use $21M in New York City without draping Central Park in an obnoxious orange overcoat.

"Seeing 'The Gates' is experiential proof that our bureaucratic and political systems can be directed to bring forth delight. The choice is ours."

This is the opening thought at http://www.tinsquo.com

They posted beautiful images, too.

I'm a firm believer that photos are ineffective at communicating the feeling of walking through, under and so on. So I've limited myself to three shots.

Start with:

http://www.samueljohnson.com/blog/parchives/050214.html and click "next" a couple times.

The gates are a perfect background for bodypainting photos but it's too cold to get half dressed people to model so I got someone with a bald head and painted it. Since I drove 4 hours to get there, I wish I could have stayed longer to meander about and take more photos but things didn't work out that way. Anyway, here's the link to my Gates photos. http://www.figurephotos.com/Christo%20Gates

I think that they are completely idiotic. It appears that someone oversized street signs and warning things used during construction on a highway and lined them up. Their are homeless people, sick people, children going without any food or education and they waste their money on that piece of crap. I think that it is a waste of space , time and money.

Funny take on the Gates! Gotta check this out!

Funny stuff and a tasty snack!

I went to The Gates today for the first time--the Winter storm made the experience all the more magical! It was around 4pm, there was still a little light out outside, and NYPD had sporadic flood lights throughout the Park. It was gorgeous.
