In Time for the Holidays, Building Your Own NYC

2005_02_tycooncity.jpg

Not a big fan with the businesses and layout of New York's buildings? Well, good news for you! Atari is coming out with Tycoon City: New York, which will supposedly have "true-to-life" neighborhoods, landmarks, and a bustling atmosphere. It's like Sim City: New York, but more detailed and "true-to-life". So if you don't like how that whole West Side Stadium thing is shaping up, perhaps you can place some buildings on the rail yard. The game will also have different jobs that you can take over: running a nightclub, throwing a concert in Central Park, owning a new restaurant, or organizing the Macy's Parade. Gothamist has to admit, organizing the parade does sound pretty awesome, but we would just have to add some panda and cat balloons.

Of course, we also wonder how realistic this game will be. Will your club be swarmed by hipsters on opening night and then "over" the next day? Will there be working subways? Bike protests? Protests down the streets of the city? Shootings in "interesting" neighborhoods? So many questions need to be answered!!

Another problem is that the game only seems to have Manhattan in it, making it a little less interesting. You can't even threaten to build a stadium for the Jets in Queens instead of over your precious rail yards.

It has only Manhattan in it--did Bloomberg design this game?

A photo-realistic game where you can explore New York City, even if it's just Manhattan? Consider me sold. I can see myself starting the game up Friday night, then not noticing the passing of time until I'm late for work Monday morning.

Seriously, I'm a very sick person when it comes to these things. Maybe it's best I just stick to Google Maps and A9 Yellow Pages. (I actually clicked and dragged myself all the way to Washington DC the other day on the 2nd-to-smallest detail level. I'm a sad sad map geek)

Additional note:

A photo-realistic, up-to-date game depiction of Brooklyn? With local neighborhood highlights? Yes, please! That'll make me a least a little less queasy about hopping on an N train and riding it until whatever stop looks good past the Manhattan Bridge...

Biran, are you serious? You're afraid of riding the N train into Brooklyn? Good lord!

Get a Metrocard. Get on the train. And if you are assaulted, threatened or harassed in any way while riding the N train I will gladly award you something to compensate for such a "dangerous" mission.

On-topic: While this game seems nice and family friendly, anyone taking any bets on what the crew at Rockstar games are brewing up? GTA: Brooklyn Zoo?

Do you think one of the business opportunities will be "president of a co-op board?"

"Protect the value of your shares by evicting endangered birds, rejecting the applications of brown-skinned millionaires, and using the administrative courts to obstruct the development of public benefits like streets, subways, and utilities!"

Afraid of getting mugged in Brooklyn: no, not really.

Afraid of getting lost wandering around some boring neighborhoods in Brooklyn, missing out on all the good stuff, and wasting my effing time: yeah, definitely.

(remember: there's only so much a Hagstrom map dated 1997 can tell you)

Brian,
Rock on fellow map-nerd!
