The NY State Supreme Court judge's ruling that gay marriage was okay is proving to be a huge problem for Mayor Bloomberg. After announcing that the city would appeal the decision, the Mayor opened himself to attack from all corners: From liberals who noted that he has supported rights for gays before; from conservatives who think he's too liberal; from potential mayoral opponents, who say he's flip-flopping; from the gay and lesbian community, who think he's being a coward. At various public appearances on Saturday, the Mayor was booed. His reasoniong for appealing the decision is because he wants to avoid the "confusion" that San Francisco eventually had, when higher courts said the gay marriage licenses issued were not legal (or valid - you get the idea). The NY Times notes that this issue will test the Mayor's political mettle; the article also offers that the Mayor is between a rock and a hard place, as he's "being asked to appeal a decision that he agrees with essentially," as the Mayor's press secretary said.
This isn't the first time the Mayor has been accused of having schizophrenic ideas about gay marriage; Gothamist just thinks it's kind of weak to fall under the "we want to avoid the confusion learned from SF" excuse, because the mayor clearly believes in supporting gay rights - he's just worried about his supposed Republican base and Governor Pataki. Too bad this issue is turning up in an election year - Gothamist has a feeling that Mayor Bloomberg might have done something interesting if this came up next year.

Without touching the basis of the his problem, it sounds like mayor mike is talking out of both sides of his mouth...
I think it's safe to say, This is what people call flip-flopping.
The amusing thing is, even if people support this issue, I don't think getting it done via the courts alone is the right way to do it. On the assumption (playing devils advocate) that this is a Civil rights issue, it should be pointed out that the court cases that started the Civil Rights fight was just that, a start.
Society changed and legislation and an amendment was passed reflecting the change in society, not society bending over and reflecting the change in the law.
Ah, SD, I know you love the attention, but are you really that ignorant of history? (And I mean "ignorant" not in a perjorative sense, but in more of a "maybe-you-are-forgetting" sense.)
In some parts of this country during the 50s and 60s society wouldn't change, hence the need for court decisions such as Brown v. Board of Ed and laws like the Civil Rights acts.
In some cases, towns and businesses were forced by the courts and legislation to change their practices, in effect made to bend over to reflect the change in the law.
"Need for Attention"?
Of course... I put my two cents in a public forum, and I must have a "Need for Attention".
I suppose that by Feeding my "Need for Attention", you're (Did I select the Right one?) you encouraging the "problem"...
Back on topic:
Oddly enough, I've studied history in detail. Brown v. Board of Ed, while a great decision, was just a start. Ultimately an amendment was passed (Note: before some one thinks it I'm **NOT ** for a "Marriage protection" Amendment). IMO, If society hadn't begun grown up, no amount of legal decisions would have done it alone. My point was simply: right or wrong society needed to change before real progress can be made.
In any case, I think Mayor Mike is screwed re: this issue.
SD, putting your two cents in is one thing. But so far on this board and on the other discussion, you've put in about twenty bucks. I'd call that a need for attention.
If this isn't a prime example of Bloomberg's lack of backbone to stand up for the rights of New Yorkers, then I don't know what is.
Ah, just what we need. The divorced Mike B heading up the fight to save the institution of marriage!
can the two or three tried ass homos in NYC who actually want to marry elect someone mayor?
Gays don't want to marry and racial minorities (who are the majority in NYC) don't like the gay marriage movement.
the horrible truth is that Gay people don't want to marry - at least not gay men. Lesbians with children have an interest in protecting the welfare of their kids. But, I think they all know that a marriage license is not the best way to do it.
The Gay Marriage Issue was invented to sell ad space in gay mags that no one reads, after American Express stopped singlehandedly funding all of the gay magazines in America.
It is really amazing how much damage a fake issue that no one cares about has done to Americans and American politics.
Any relatively smart couple (gay or straight) who both have their own money probably formed LLCs together long ago. I mean, why get tied down to one tired ass sperm chucker when ... All Men Are Temp
With an LLC you can marry multiple guys
