The NY Times has Jennifer Steinhauer, recently released from the clutches of City Hall, look at the rash of British tourists visiting our fair city. Reasons for coming include the weak dollar (there are some things foreigners and New Yorkers can thank President Bush for), the fine drinks at NY watering holes, Macy's, the fact that we sorta speak the same language, and T.G.I. Friday's - everything that makes this city great. A spokesperson for the British Association of Travel Agents says:
"We have all seen Woody Allen movies and Sex and the City and NYPD Blue. So you think it is an exciting place you have to go to. We don't hear that it is particularly dirty or unsafe. They know it is a big city and it is going to be loud and noisy and that is all O.K."Well, Gothamist has seen Brideshead Revisited, The Office, Absolutely Fabulous, Fawlty Towers, Mike Leigh and Richard Curtis films, Blow-Up and Benny Hill, and we love you, too, Britain.
Vacation deals to London from Expedia. And, top of the morning to you, Londonist!

To hell with London this time of year.
You think its cold here Now? Go to London during Dec/Jan. Your ass will freeze. Not to mention the Exchange rate is not kind to us.
When my cousins visit from England, they buy out everything. The Pound is so good to them, and guess where they and everyone else goes when they visit NY...
Conway.
Which London are you talking about? West Virginia? Ontario? Or the one in England?
I could be wrong here, but your ass will have a hard time freezing when the average minimum is above zero.
Every time i've visited during Jan its colder then a witch's tit. Miserable Weather. no wonder Madonna moved out, now I know she's not completely insane.
Averages are averages. And I dont live there. Guess its bac luck on my part.
Probably. I lived their for 4 years growing up and it was plenty cold, but nowhere near as cold as New York.
In the time I was there, it never snowed enough to stick (London actually has a lower average precipitation than NY in winter) and never got the kind of crazy storms that hit the East Coast periodically. It generally stayed at or above freezing and didn't fluctuate as much.
I was in England for all of last year and I never liked London much when I visited it. It's even more expensive than NYC (how is that possible?) and somehow it lacks the energy that you find here, despite its size...there are good restaurants and great pubs, and the clubs are okay, but I missed New York. I probably didn't see enough of London to appreciate it.
Wouldn't "top of the morning to you" be a more appropriate shout-out to Dublinist?
I Love the Office!!
Ricky Gervais (David Brendt on The Office) is doing a kids book - "Flanimals." Check it out on the UK amazon site. Coming to the US next month!! It's hilarious!
idiomist - probably, but I've heard some Irish accents on the subway, so I know they are visiting too.
But Gothamist has NOT seen Coupling?!?! Oh Gothamist... for shame!! It's hil-ar-ious.
You left out Poldark! Which was the HOTTEST period drama going!
just because the Irish are visiting NY doesn't mean they'd be reading Londonist. I don't see any connection between the two, except that you probably assumed that British people say "top of the morning" as well as Irish people. They are two separate nationalities, you know. (Though I have to say I don't know of any Irish who would ever actually ever say "top of the morning" without some irony.)
I'm a Brit who lives here. My sister visited NYC for the first time last week. Worst storm weekend of the year but she went home with:
jeans with sequins ($215)
jeans no sequins ($125)
3 * various brand sneakers ($250)
Coat from B Republic ($300)
Tshirts and tops from A&F ($200)
I won't even start to describe her reaction when entering the new DSW store in Union Sq. Needless to say, the Brits are all very much in favour of W's 'strong' dollar policy.
Wow Mike. Your sis either has very expensive tastes, got ripped off, or both. Even $300 for a BR Coat is a little extreme.
Ripped off? Sure, but who cares? The dollar is so weak, you'll be lucky to get a plate of bangers and mash for $300.
I was more shocked by a pair of jeans for $215! Only discernible difference between those and the ones for $125 were some sparkly bits on the back pocket. Womens jeans - a mystery.
