Being British and living in Cobble HIll I was very excited about the Chip Shop. I have to say, the chips are great. The curry sauce is great (it is NOT Indian food, people. It's supposed to taste like British chip shop curry sauce. If you want Indian food go to an Indian restaurant!) However, the three times that I've had the fish and chips the fish has been VERY bad. They are clearly not using the freshest available fish, it's chewing, fishy and often discolored. My boyfriend tells me that the shepherds pie and bangers are great. I usually stick to the chips and beans.

I ate at the Atlantic Ave. Chip SHop for the first (and LAST) time this past Friday. Although the staff WAS friendly... the cod and chips were tasteless. I finished about half.

An hour or so later, I became violently ill, and for the next 24 hours, wished I would just die and get it over with.

Next day, after missing an important event I had planned to attend, I calmly rang the Chip Shop just to inform the owner of my food poisoning. After all doesn't new businesses WANT to know?

The owner was completely indifferent. He could care less. Perhaps he thought I was giving him a compliment?

If you decide to risk your life and eat at the Atlantic Ave. Chip House...Make sure you have a bucket by your side and a comfortable toilet to spend the night on.

It kind of makes me laugh that you're all going mad over the new chip shop and debating when it's going to open - they're pretty much ten a penny here in Sheffield, England.

I'm sorry to have to break it to you but chips haven't been sold in newspaper for several years now - Health and Safety. In fact, I don't know if I've ever seen it done. They come wrapped in plain white paper instead :-)
(And just to be awkward, the chippy I go to most often is run by Chinese people - and is damn tasty!)

The Chip Shop is terribly overrated and hypesoaked. They're biggest surge of publcity came when they deep fried Twinkies. Hooray. So they hit it okay on 5th Avenue in the Slope. But as someone who lives nearby, I'd rathrr spend time in Montero's, Floyd, Last Exit or even Magnetic Field more than this grease hole.

Word to the wise. When Smith Street is so close with so many better options, there's no reason to waste time and subject your stomach to cruddy grease and bad fish at the Chip Shop.

And the fact that they're "Coming Soon!" schtick has been going on since last Spring is not a good sign. Or maybe it is a good sign? I'd rather see another kebab house open in that space than have the Chip Shop infect the 'hood.

Cindy, I am sorry, but being a dick, because that is how it is done in England just doesn't fly. The mean ones aren't even British.

I have been to many pubs all over England and had much better service. The people at Chip Shop are just plain rude.

Where is Mary Poppins when you need her? Delivery with a smile!!

I would be interested in what Indian food in the Slope you recommend. They all seem so empty.

Chip Shop, Shmip Shop . . . skip it and just go a block or so away to Pete's Waterfront Ale House. Been around forever, great selection of beers (and cask ales, if you're into that sort of thing), and some excellent barbecue. Totally unpretentious service and prices that actually make you feel like you're getting what you pay for (unlike Chip Shop).

I've had good luck at Chip Shop, but fried candy bars are where I draw the line, even though I like candy and fats.

And though it can get a little pricey, it's my little way of pretending I'm in Blightey.

Though clearly NOT the Chip Shop and therefore totally irrelevant, their sister restaurant, the Curry House, is disgusting. I'm poor and order in food very rarely. It came late, the food was pretty disgusting and worse of all - it was STORE BOUGHT NAAN BREAD!

the horror.

The whole point of Chip Shop is that it's British -- go to any pub in England and you'll find similar service and uneven, but sometimes great, food. The Indian food is crappy compared to the nearest Indian restaurant, but that's exactly how British Indian food is supposed to be, right?

After seventh months of eating vegetarian (it was a New Year's resolution), I broke down and got bangers and mash at Chip Shop. It was fantastic. And the blackberry soda and fish and chips (though no longer wrapped in British newspapers) are bloody damn good. Too bad this place is mobbed all the time because Americans are fixated with all things British. Can't wait for the Atlantic Ave version.

Here's my story about S&B if anyone's interesed: http://newyorkguide.blogs.com/uknyc/2004/11/salt_and_batter.html

I can't wait for the ChipShop.

While I am a big fan of their food, the waitstaff is amongst the rudest I have ever been served by. (Though, the only real Englishman that works there is very nice. The only nice person there.)

There are only a few waiters that work there and they have been for quite some time. I have been praying that they move on soon. Hopefully some will go to the new location.

I would love to complain, but imagine they will just spit in my food. AAAAHHHHH!

The Chip Shop in Park Slope is incredibly overrated along with the Curry house that's located in the same space. It's a great marketing concept to the pitch to the PK Slope hipster masses, but the owners seem to forget that the fish needs to be fresh in order to fry and that some fish isn't good to fry.

I've called them intermittently, every two weeks or so, since Thanksgiving, and every single time I call, I get the same answer: "next week." I'm not holding my breath!
