Hot 97 Morning Show Suspended

2005_01_hot97logo.jpg

More than a week after the first playing of the "Tsunami" song parody, Hot 97 has finally suspended its morning show staff indefinitely. The station decided that just having Miss Jones and others apologize and donate money was not enough, after outrage from fans, Asian mediawatch groups, and politicians, plus advertisers like Sprint and McDonald's pulling out from advertising. However, people are speculating whether the suspension is a real reprimand or for show, as well as whether Hot 97 is just trying to placate people. The debate about the incident has been very interesting to Gothamist, given that there's accusations of racism from all corners, but most of all, people agree that this was stupid and every careless act that promotes hate should be looked at just as closely.

Thanks to Jay Smooth at hiphopmusic.com for keeping tabs on this.

After downloading the infamous "Tsunami Song" online, I was greatly appalled with what I heard. Before the song even started, Miss Jones had stated that Miss Info thought she was superior because she was Asian (racial slur 1). Then someone in the background said something about shooting Asians (racial slur 2). “Chinks”(racial slur 3). Get the picture? I mean it does bother me, with the whole s"hooting Asians, Chinks, etc." but that doesn’t even compare to the fact that the people from the radio station (Miss Jones and her Ignorant Posy) would ever poke fun at a tragedy (200,000 people died). It’s bad enough that people there are already suffering… with no shelter, food, mothers, fathers, sisters, brothers, etc. The fact of the matter is, humor has limitations. Racism is here and always will be, I can accept that… but making fun at people dying? That’s past immature, that’s inhumane.

MLK died for our rights, for everyone’s rights (Asians, Hispanics, etc.)

Interesting. I just wonder, given the general attitude of the production staff which was either benched or sacked, what their take is on "black on black" violence??? Seems to me they have no qualms publically venting their own outspoken racism against Asians. I thought blacks weren't SUPPOSED to be racist! Heck, does this mean we're no better than whites? Tell me it ain't so! Does this mean hiphop is now a racist, violent cultural phenomenon?

I'm an African-American female who really empathizes with the Asian community regarding the racist "shock" tactics that HOT 97 and its morning show staff used to boost their ratings, but I find it sad that once again we as minorities are being divided over this incident. Do you all realize that the producer of the morning show, Rick Delgado, who wrote the song is white? Do you even care? I can't tell by reading these web pages.

As a responsible person, I've been following this story and trying to do my part to support human kind and encourage change, but every website that I visit I read e-mails asking how a black person would feel being called the "n" word. Well, the obvious answer is that we would be just as hurt as you are right now, but you have to understand that there is a painful history of that word that dates back hundreds of years in this country. And no, not all black people use that word when speaking to one another. Now I'm not suggesting that the "c" word is any less hurtful, but we are living in the country that started the use of that hateful word and to add insult to injury, we as minorities are all constantly being disrespected by other minority groups, which makes no sense because we are all living in a society that believe that "all-american" means having blond hair and blue eyes, which means that one could be visiting here from the Netherlands and be treated with more respect than a minority who was born and raised here.

Let me be clear, I love all people because I love myself and see my self as a beautiful human being, not a beautiful black woman. I know that people are upset, but please don't judge all black people by the actions of one company (Hot 97) and its employees. I remember not too long ago when old recording surfaced of Eminem (the new Elvis) calling black women bitches and rapping that black women are bad and dirty and that white women are clean and good and the whole world ignored it and agreed that it was in his past and that everyone makes mistakes. DID YOU OBJECT TO THAT? Probably not. I'm sure many of you have his album (I WOULD NEVER BUY ANY OF HIS ALBUMS). If so, then you are justified in not forgiving, if not, then maybe it's true...we are all human and make mistakes! I say all of that to say, please be responsible enough to hold all involved equally accountable.

Just to clear up a misconception, Miss Info was NOT suspended, but rather opted to stay off the air along with her suspended co-workers. And now word has it that she is planning to bring legal action against Emmis for forcing her to work in a hostile environment.

No matter what race you are its not cool to make fun of anyone else's tradgedy. To get angry and stay stuff back is even worse. As everyone knows the people on HOT 97 try to get a rise out of everyone for ratings. Its a shame that Miss Jones and crew want to make fun of people that died period is just wrong. I'm black and I make it a point not to do that-even if others do that to me and think it is funny. The unforunate fact is that every group has people in it that are racist. Asian, Black, White etc. EVERYONE DOES IT. and its not right. I hope that one day people will realize that its not cool no matter who says what to whom.

The double standard is interesting. Todd Lynn used as a defence that he is a big dark black man. If anyone knew what racism was, he did. That's not a defense. Just because you've been discriminated against doesn't mean that you can't discriminate back. An interesting look into the dynamics of this double standard it Die Hard 3. Bruce Willis's character calls Sam Jackson's character a racist. He was. He prejudeged all white people based soley on their race.

We as a whole Americans nation whether you are African Americans, Caucasian Americans, Hispanic Americans, Asian Americans and etc. sympathizes with African Americans in the time of slavery in America. We study that point of time in school and have a nation’s holiday or a nation’s remembrance for that tragic period of time. Just to think that Miss Jones and assuming her crew is African Americans decent should sympathize with the word slavery, period... and nevertheless the phrase " CHILD SLAVERY " should be a dagger in the heart of all mankind... children of this world the next world, third world, or fourth world which I don't really care... Children’s bottom line are innocent... They should not be criticize or ridicule for any manner. I can barely take the fact that they were making fun of us Asians, and more importantly a international horrifying tragedy, but to make fun of slavery and children broke my heart into tears. Whether Miss Jones and her morning crew is suspended or fired. I believe that will never be enough… if I got on the radio and made a song about Miss Jones and her morning crew saying God watching down laughing at their kids drowning and telling them swim B**** swim… I don’t’ think my apology or me being suspended will ever be enough.

OMG Derek, you expressed what I have always been frustrated over. It's so true, why is that there's double standards when it comes to racism? When a non-black person makes a racial slur towards an African-American, all hell breaks loose. However, when an African-American makes a crude remark about Asians, all they get is a slap on the wrist.

  • Derek

What really makes me angry is the double standard we have in this country. If a white male make a "racial slur" such as the one that Rob Blair illegedly made on this weather forcast he is fired imediatly however when a black or group of blacks make a statment the tables turn. By the way.. rob did not say the word coon. Download the audio and listen to it as I have and you will hear that it was a simple swap of letters as we all do from time to time. This guy started his career when he was 14 years old and lost it because of the mentality that 8 years of Clinton's bullshit left. Either fire all these people with the exception of "mrs info" or get over it and just except that there is going to be hate in the world and that its not personal.

I CANT BELIEVE HOW MISS JONES INSISTED MISS INFO TO TAKE PART OF THIS CRAP, EVEN HAD A FIGHT WITH HER ON AIR BECAUSE MISS INFO DIDNT WANT TO BE PART OF IT, LIKE WOW IM SURE U WERE POSESSED BY THE DEVIL HIMSELF, TO EVEN MAKE YOU SING ABOUT GOD LIKE THAT, LIKE IF HE WAS A BAD GOD. LAUGHING AND SHIT...LIKE WOW I COULDNT BELIEVE MY EARS... AND THAT COMMENT ABOUT THE WOMAN HAVING A TREE THROUGH HIS HEAD AND THEN HER CHILDREN WOULD HAVE TO BE SOLD TO CHILD SLAVERY.. Sorry Mike, your statement is just as racist as what we're protesting wtih Miss Jones and crew. There is nothing inherent in Asian identity (race is not real, racism is) that means they'll succeed, and there is nothing inherent in black or African American identty that means they don't work hard. Structural racism is the key--not biology or culture. As an Asian American myself, I reject your use of the model minority stereotype against black culture.

  • Karen

Sorry Mike, your statement sounds pretty racist to me. There is nothing inherent in Asian identity (race is not real, racism is) that means they'll succeed, and there is nothing inherent in black or African American identty that means they don't work hard. Structural racism is the key--not biology or culture. As an Asian American myself, I reject the stereotype of Asian Americans as a model minority, a stereotype created to divide marginalized people in our society.

  • MIKE

LETS NOT BE HOT 97 SHOULD BE TAKEN OFF THE AIR PERIOD... MISS INFO IS A TRAITOR TO HER ASIAN HERITAGE. SHAME ON ASIANS WHO TRY AND PRETEND THEIR BLACK. THE BLACK CULTURE IN AMERICA IS JEALOUS OF ASIANS BECAUSE OF THE SIMPLE FACT THAT ASIANS ARE MORE INTELLIGENT THAN BLACKS AND ACTUALLY WORK HARDER.

  • S.D.

    http://www.hiphopmusic.com/ has some interesting updates...

Coca Cola has apperently pulled Advertising too *and* the "Hot" 97 web site has no links to the Morning show.

    Could be temporary...

  • ED209,

I would say "could" or "possibly would", not "should". As indefensibly tasteless as the Tsunami song was, it wasn't, in my opinion, profane or pornographic.

    --

On further thought, I concede that the threat of FCC action may have contribute to the suspensions but ultimately, it was the ad revenue that pulled the trigger.

Would the sponsors have pulled even if there wasn't a threat of FCC action? I say yes. I point to the Sinclair Broadcast/Stolen Honor controversy, where FCC came out and said "We got nothing", but sponsors still pulled ads from Sinclair stations and forced the programming change.

  • ED209

FCC should still fine EMMIS. If they could do it to Howard Stern, CBS, ABC, and any company with a broadcasting license, what's stopping them now?!?!

  • nola

Obviously the station wants to impress the FCC by showing them how seriously they take this. That is why the threat of FCC action has an impact. Of course complaining to the sponsors is a good idea and I'm glad there was some response. But companies that market to the birdbrains who listen to this garbage will sponsor anything that brings in an audience. Without the possibility of FCC action there is no way to be sure the station or sponsors would have responded.

And the racist aspect to this story is being underplayed, as it always is when the perpetrator is black. If standards were evenly applied, Messrs. Sharpton and Jackson would have been out of business a long time ago.

  • S.D.

Well, FCC Fines might be getting worse especially considering the current political climate. Likely their License would not be pulled, but lets say they get fined for **Everytime** they played it over 4 days. That adds up to a hefty chunk of change that the management does Not want to defend publically or to the owners.

"There was no FCC action, only a threat thereof, which they had no control over."

How do you know there is no pending FCC investigation? As per several sites that urged people to submit complaints, the FCC recieved many complaints which they must consider.

The threat of a possible FCC investigation would contribute to the show being pulled since that would also affect the bottom line and possibly put the license on probation. If the Licence goes on probation (Rare but possible) then "Hot" 97 would be hard to sell and be at risk of suspension inthe event of another violation.

IMO, totaly ignoring the FCC as a consideration is a mistake.
