Beware of Snow Plows

Snow's dark side has hit New York in unexpected ways. Last weekend, a girl was killed by a snow plow. Markita Weaver, a 10 year-old who had gone out to play with a girl, was in a snow drift near Richards and Wolcott Streets in Red Hook, making a snow angel, when the plow moved past her, dumping snow on top. Her death was called an accident, but her family is planning to sue the city.

And while snow plows didn't kill him, they certainly prevented people from realizing that a cab driver was dead inside his cab. It seems that the 70 year-old driver suffered a heart attack on Saturday, while still inside his car (parked in front of his building). Then snow plows covered the car, blocking people's views until the snow melted yesterday. Gothamist generally likes snow plows (Mr. Plow!), but we take these stories as warnings: No more playing in snow drifts on the road and try not to have a heart attack in a car during a blizzard.

joe's nyc has fabulous snow plow shots, including one today and one from the weekend (above).

Obviously Chris has never had his rear view mirror sheared off by a plow blade. Thank you for your two cents. Your change is in the mail.

This just in, they won the suit and now snowplows cannt come within 8 feet of either curb. Snow plow blades are being reduced to 6' wide to comply with the new law. All streets will now be one way streets since 2 cars cannot travel at the same time. People have to shovel their cars out and the snow they disperse will just pile ip on the curbs since the plow cannot touch it and accidents and aggrivation are up 300%, snow angel making is also up 600%, go kids...

  • yesterday afternoon a snow plow came within inches of the shotgun side of the car i was in (riding shotgun). i think the driver of the plow may have been drunk (or just completely fucking OBLIVIOUS). Anyway, it gave me a good scare.

On a happier note, you totally turned me on to yet another amazing photoblog! Overshadowed and Joesnyc are officially bookmarked.

    Thanks!

  • what?

"Try not to have a heart attack"? that's pretty insensitive, Jen. and not funny.

    Mr. Plow is a loser,

and I think he is a boozer.

  • Sad stuff. Kids should be able to play safely but snow needs to be cleared. It's a no win, no sensible answer situation

The cab-driver-found-dead-in-his-cab-after-the-snow-melts story is bound to be a Law & Order opener sometime soon.
