Nerd School For Staten Island

2005_01_statenislandtech.jpg

Yesterday, Mayor Bloomberg, Schools Chancellor Joel Klein and other Staten Island politicans announced new education initiatives in the tiny borough. The big news is that Staten Island will get its own gifted-and-talent magnet school, like Stuyvesant and Bronx Science, which would mean kids citywide might be taking the ferry over for high school. Staten Island Tech already is a well-performing school, but the mayor wants to give S.I. something special before he goes up for reelection, mainly agita for parents and middle schoolers who moved to Staten Island for the lower real estate prices and good schools. But one student wonders if having nerds come to S.I. Tech is a good idea, "Admitting students who are good test-takers doesn't mean they'll show up to class every day and be committed to the school." One thing is for sure: People will know where to find the nerds and taunt them.

way back in the day, i started to go to s.i. tech for high school, where i had to study russian and use t-square every day. not only was it in middle-of-nowhere-SI, there were only *four* girls in the entire freshman class. needless to say, i quickly transfered after my first semester to better attend to my teenage needs.

anyway, have fun commuting for hours to get to this nerd paradise!

highest point on the east coast?! I guess you've never heard of Maine, and that's if you only count the US.

Back on topic, this is a good move so the not-quite-ready-for-stuy crowd won't have to travel 4 hours to the Bronx.

Staten Islanders who move to Manhattan are the cool ones that you actually want to meet, hello, duh!! It means we've had enough of the mawl and we don't wanna tawk to Vinny and Ant'ny no maw.

"tiny"??? When was the last time you looked at a map??? Staten Island is, geographically, the largest borough (or at least second largest after queens). It also, by the way, has the highest point on the east coast and the world's largest garbage dump!
