Benefit in Bed

No, that's not what we mean -- get your minds out of the gutter. A dozen of New York's chefs are joining together for "Get in Bed," a benefit for Plan USA's tsunami relief efforts. On January 31, twelve chefs including Floyd Cardoz of Tabla, Food Network host and cookbook author Tyler Florence, and Zak Pelaccio of 5 Ninth, will each cook one dish, for a total of eight savory and four sweet dishes. The benefit is being held at BED, which features, you guessed it, actual beds in which you can dine. Cost is $2,000 per bed (holds up to eight people) or $250 per single ticket. Plan USA, established in 1937 to help children in impoverished countries, has already set up makeshift camps for homeless and orphaned children in Sri Lanka and are committed to rebuilding communities impacted by the tsunami. 100% of the money raised will go to their rebuilding efforts. 2005_01_food_eatinbed.jpgAnd although we love getting served breakfast in bed (which hasn't happened in way too long, by the way), we're not quite sure what to make of the dining-in-bed trend that seems to have popped up. Last month brought us Duvet at 45 W. 21st Street near Sixth Avenue, featuring the cuisine of David Coleman, formerly of the now-closed Union Pacific. What do you think of dining out in bed? Seems weird to us. If we wanted to eat in bed, we'd stay at home and order in. We're tempted to show up in our red flannel pajamas, just to see what happens.

My mind is awash in random questions, the most prominent being: If you bought a single ticket to this event, might they put you in a bed with strangers to fill up a table? Creepy.

I'd have the luck of having a weird guy on one side and a German tourist playboy metrosexual on the other. Gag.

This just seems like an opportunity for people to see how NYers who live in too-small studios eat their dinners: perched on the edge of their bed, trying not to drop food in the sheets. I think I'm going to open a restaurant called SINK, where people can dine standing up, eating bowls of cereal while leaning over a kitchen sink.

Oh my God -- SINK. That's perfect. I'm there.

Yawn. Bed (the restaurant/club) is a concept that was going on in Miami 5 years ago.
