Finding Comfort in the Cheesiest of Places

Damn, it's cold outside. The past few days have made us want to curl up in our flannel p.j.'s and fuzzy slippers, rent movies, and seek warmth and solace in our favorite comfort foods. Near the top of almost everyone's comfort food list is macaroni and cheese, and this week New York Magazine rounds up some of the creamiest, cheesiest versions in the city.

We've had the versions at Blue Smoke and the Bar @ Etats-Unis, but we'd like to add City Bakery's version to the list -- extra-sharp Cheddar gives it a nice cheesy zing. If you're feeling up to it, you can whip up some of your own mac & cheese with the recipe from the now-closed Canteen. When we published this one, people went nuts asking us if it was the mac & cheese from Canteen (it is). We've also had Emeril's four-cheese version, which kicked major ass, on New Year's Day. Admittedly, our judgment might have been slightly hangover-impaired, but either way, we were certainly comforted by it.

Thanks for all the comments and recipe links everyone -- keep 'em coming! Apparently we need to do our own mac & cheese roundup. Or maybe we can hit up a bunch of spots on a cold day -- like a pub crawl, but better!

this is the only link i can find with the recipe. but the mac and cheese from the storefront Good and Plenty takeout in Hell's Kitchen is amazing. maybe it's the full cream called for in the recipe. Whatever the reason, it's totally worth the trip and worth the time to make it at home.

Artisanal makes a good macaroni and cheese, but it can be inconsistent.

I like Patti LaBelle's macaroni and cheese recipe; and Martha Stewart's actually.

the place that used to be where rocco's is - capital i think? - had a fabulous mac and cheese with truffles. amazing!!

Mama's on 3rd and Ave B was great for Mac and Cheese, and MY personal #1 comfort food, Meatloaf. haven't been there in a long time tho....yummmmmmm.....

dumont's is over rated. their cheese isnt sharp enough. the best mac n cheese i've ever had that wasnt my dad's was at the Silvertone in Boston. hands down.

Chat'n Chew by far! You can get the recipe on foodtv.com. The american cheese adds a real creaminess to the texture and the hot sauce and onions add to the to-die-for-ness of the flavor. My guests always rave!
