Two More Foodie Fundraisers

2005_01_food_iceculinary.jpgGluttony can sometimes be a good thing, like when it can raise money to benefit Action Against Hunger’s (AAH) tsunami relief effort. Embrace your gluttonous side, and hit up the Institute of Culinary Education's fundraisers next Monday and Tuesday.

On Monday, January 17 at 6:30 p.m., there will be a demonstration class focusing on the foods of India, Thailand, and Indonesia. Julie Sahni, author of Classic Indian Cooking and countless other volumes; Corinne Trang, author of Essentials of Asian Cuisine: Fundamentals and Favorite Recipes; and James Oseland, author of the upcoming The Cradle of Flavor: Essential Recipes from Indonesia, Malaysia & Singapore, will demonstrate and offer for tasting some of their favorite recipes. Tickets are $120.

On Tuesday, January 18 at 6:30 p.m., chefs/authors and TV personalities Sara Moulton and David Rosengarten and AAH’s Executive Director Anne-Sophie Fournier will be the guests of honor and speakers at a five-course seasonal American dinner prepared by ICE’s chef-instructors. The menu looks scrumptious, and includes Smoked Duck Quesadillas, Trio of American Smoked Fish with Caviar and Winter Vegetable Salad, Wild Mushroom Consommé with Foie Gras Raviolo, Roast Loin of Venison with Pomegranate Glaze, Celeriac Purée, and Wilted Greens, a selection of American Farmhouse Cheeses, and wine pairings with each course. Tickets are $150.

To purchase tickets, which are 100 percent tax deductible, call ICE at 212-847-0770. Their goal is to raise $20,000, so bring your friends along with your appetite.

There are also a number of restaurants who are donating some of their proceeds to Tsunami relief. For instance, next Thursday (Jan. 20), Balthazar Bakery on Spring Street is donating 20% to Oxfam (or Red Cross), and Spice Grill on Murray Street (btwn. Broadway and Church, right near City Hall) is donating 10% of everything, I suppose, to a charity.
