Iron Chefs Battle In NY

Reading the William Grimes' NY Times feature on Iron Chef America on the Food Network (it premieres this Sunday) only made Gothamist, to borrow a phrase from another Food TV personality, kick our irrational hatred of Bobby Flay up a notch. BAM! Forever will the memory of Bobby Flay jumping up on the kitchen counter during the 2000 Iron Chef showdown between Flay and Masaharu Morimoto be burned in our brains. Grimes mentions the incident, chalking it up to emotions running high, but considering that Flay almost singed his eyebrows in the latest episode, we can only hope that he'll decide to retire from Iron Chefdom and stick to his crappy judging a crappy reality show gig. In the meantime, we'll be rooting against him - go Rick Bayless!

In spite of the Flay, there are many things about the show to be loved: Alton Brown as host, other iron chefs Mario Batali and Morimoto, and we are psyched that Jeffrey Steingarten is one of the judges. But what is Julie Chen Moonves doing there? She doesn't look like she eats! Here are some upcoming battles Gothamist is looking forward to:
January 30, Bobby Flay vs. Ming Tsai
February 27, Bobby Flay vs. Govind Armstrong (of Table 8 in LA)
March 6, Masaharu Morimoto vs. Roberto Donna
March 20, Mario Batali vs. Scott Campbell (of @SQC, home of the pudding-like hot chocolate)

Newsday on the new Iron Chef series and Iron Chef America is filming at Chelsea Market, which means we must try and find a way in to be part of the crowd.

I hope this Iron Chef America fails horribly.
How dare they Bastardize the Original Japanese Iron Chef. Its just not the same...
I'm too used to the english dubbing and the crazy host.

Can't have Iron Chef without Chairman Kaga. Who the hell is the dork in the glasses?

I don't know, I think Alton Brown is pretty good. I'm not a cook, but I occasionally watch his show "Good Eats" for the entertainment...

Sweet...I thought I was the only one who hates Bobby Flay! He's disrespectful and cocky. The Mesa Grill is easily the most overrated restaurant in NYC. For chrissakes, the guy is from New York and thinks he's some kind of Southwestern cooking god. Well let me tell you, as a native Texan I say all of his dishes are totally BLAND.

Ewwww - saw the first episode of Bobby Flay verses Sakai and was extremely dissapointed.
Dissapointed with Wonderbread fed Judges who had no pallette what so ever. Bobby Flay's food was extremely flat when compared with the artful dance of Sakai.
If this was to a 'true' face off it should have had Asian judges versus American judges.

Alton Brown is the most annoying TV personality this side of Rachel Ray.

Okay, those are fighting words. Good Eats is the best show on FoodTV. Sure, when he does sketches they're kinda annoying. (the chili episode comes to mind) But teaches you how to cook in a unique way, but not telling you what to do but why to do it, the science behind cooking. It's really an enjoyable show for the inner geek in all of us. And his meals taste good to. So there.

so glad to see that other people cringe at the thought of the americanized iron chef. bobby flay does not need another opportunity to embarass himself. i still cringe when i think of him jumping on the counter when he "won" iron chef. why cant FoodTV just leave a good thing as it is?!

Morimoto on Flay: "He is not a chef!"

As someone who first watched Iron Chef when it was first on in Japan ages and ages ago, I gotta say, this wasn't so bad. It lost a lot of the campiness - as much as I love the goofy translations, this is a good move - and kept the essence.

Thought Rick Bayless kicked much ass, though Flay's buffalo steak did look really really good.
