Since Londonist has reported on their local rockers (Bloc Party) done good, we'll report on ours. New York's The Bravery has been given the number one slot in the BBC Sound of 2005 poll. Meaning what exactly? That this is (apparently) THE band to watch in 2005. Last year Keane was named number one, and in 2003 rapper 50 Cent held the position.
We aren't that big on lists like this, because who can predict who will create the soundtracks of a certain year? I see a lot of 2004's bigger breakout bands missing from last years list, and a few bands missing from this years as well. But it can still be a good indicator on who to watch out for, and we certainly do love the Bravery. Who, incidentally, play Northsix in Brooklyn on January 29th.

Nice. I think Keane would have been even bigger if their lead singer didn't do that stilted shoulder thing in the video for Somewhere Only We Know. That and if they had more hard catchy riffs like FF.
Souunds like more of the same for 2005. Keep it locked on the Breezeblock.
The bravery do indeed sound rather good. But you know what, i'm supposed you still take any notice when a new york band hits the big time. There have been so many!! The strokes, The Walkmen and my 2nd favorite band in the whole world... Interpol!!
I vote for the Prosaics and Dresden Dolls for '05...
The other British band that should be on the 2005 list is Maximo Park, the first "rock" band signed to Warp Records in a mighty long time. No funky basslines or disco hi-hats; they're more the C-86 indie variety, updated of course. Only one single out so far -- "The Coast is Always Changing" -- but their demos are fantastic and if the singer can keep his voice from trilling too much, Maximo Park could be the next big thing.
The Bloc Party album is really good, I must admit.
No comment on the Bravery.
Next thing you know, The Bravery will be appearing on The O.C.
I think the list is crap overall, but I really like Bloc Party. I think their new album is going to get a lot of positive buzz.
Also, watch out for Kaiser Chiefs. I've only heard one song from them so far ("I Predict A Riot), but it's an awesome tune.
BTW, Kaiser Chiefs will be playing a free show this Saturday at Tribeca Grand.
Sorry for the spacing on my last comment. Very annoying.
I slight bad quality promo of their LP shows some promise, it's quite similar a sound to franz ferdinand which kinda leads me to think that its this simularity that is getting them attention more than the actual quality of the songs.
I saw the Bravery open for VHS or Beta at the Knitting Factory not long ago and about 4 songs in they literally drove me from the club. So wannabe-WB (guess I'm not the only one, see the O.C. comment above), and they are def. the most affected group I have seen in a long long time. I don't get it.
