Central Parks Starts To Get Gates

Ooh - The Gates are starting to go up in Central Park. Over the next few weeks, 7500 16' tall gates will be installed along 23 miles of the park; billowing orange curtains will also be installed. The Christo project has been in the making for over the past 25 years, but only got the greenlight from the Bloomberg administration (the Mayor is a big supporter of the arts). We can't wait to see what it looks like - The Gates will officially go on display from February 12 to February 25 - but Gothamist has to say that "The Fates" sounds rather apocalyptic, like "The Four Horsemen" or "The Reckoning" or "The Inferno." At any rate, we take continue to take a cue from what deputy mayor Patricia Harris told the NY Times: "Public art is wonderful, surprising, amusing and sometimes confusing." [via Curbed]. (This sentiment is reiterated in Newsday's article about the start of the installation, which begins, " Love it or loathe it, you certainly won't be able to miss it.")

Are any photobloggers planning on heading up to Central Park to check out the installation? Here's the city's website about Christo and Jeanne-Claude's The Gates, and here's Christo and Jeanne-Claude's own website about it.

heading up there tonight to photo-document the process.

Did they choose "Men-At-Work Orange" from the Crayola box for any particular reason?

I had seen the sketches before, but had no idea it would be THAT orange.
