Gothamist doesn't really like New Years Eve, it's overhyped and too expensive. So short of suggesting you just stay at home here's a little list of things you could do to ring in '05.

There are still tickets left for Wilco, Flaming Lips and Sleater-Kinney at MSG [we know, not below 14th]. As well as for Patti Smith at Bowery.

For the glitter and white powder head to Motherfucker New Years Eve Ball 2005 with the Bravery (who play at 3am). Print this out for reduced admission, although you may want to buy tickets in advance. Or there's always Misshapes which will be held at the Tribeca Grand Hotel. Live performances by Peaches and V.I.P.. The tickets are $99, but there's a gift bag!
If you're going to be in Brooklyn we suggest Crashin' In at Supreme Trading in Williamsburg with live performances by Beans and Mommy and Daddy. DJ's Gordy from Bloc Party, Blake from Moving Units and more.
If you'd rather just sit back and watch kung fu there's only one place to do that this New Years (we think) and that's at Two Boots Pioneer Theater for Bruce Lee and Beyond: New Year's Eve Triple Bill.
You can never go wrong with good friends, some dinner and drinks at a bar, and if that's your thing here are some places to check out:
12" Bar [179 Essex St]: 10 bucks gets you one drink ticket, champagne toast, food, 3 deejays and noisemakers!
Pianos [158 Ludlow St]: 10 bucks gets you in and 70 bucks gets you open bar and food from 9pm to 2am, champagne toast, deejays and Chin Chin.

If Pianos actually had an open bar from 9-2am for $10, I'd be there in a second. Following the link, however, it seems that the deal is $10 to get in, no open bar, and a champagne toast at midnight. $70 for open VIP bar upstairs from 10pm-2am. Unclear whether one has to pay the $70 in addition to $10 for the general admittance.
I love the Gothamist I do, but why are you directing hoards of peeing, puking drunken people to my neighborhood? The center will not hold.
Wouldn't they prefer an nice walk down west end avenue or the rarified air of the UES?
i don't think the events listed will attract anyone who wouldn't have already gone anyway, i think we're all safe from the tourists down here...
