Lemurs on the Loose!!

The Bronx Zoo has announced that it is closing the Wildlife Survival Center on St. Catherines Island in Georgia. The center, which uses 150 of the island's 14,000 acres, is home to 435 animals and 46 species. Open for 30 years, zoo officials say the original objective of observing animals in a natural habitat have been met. The animals could be observed in herds and the center was used to study the reintroduction of animals to the wild. Up to 70 lemurs roamed the island, some of which will be coming to the Bronx for a Madagascar exhibit in 2006. The rest of the animals will be relocated to zoos around the country.
