Earthquake And Tsunamis Hit Asia

On Saturday, the biggest earthquake in 40 years hit southeast Asia, which then led to huge tsunamis all over the region, causing over thousands of deaths and displacing millions more. The earthquake measured 9.0 on the Richter scale and was centered on the Indonesian island of Sumatra; the tsunamis measuring over 40 feet then hit and flooded parts of Thailand, India, Sri Lanka, and the Maldives. Right now, the death toll is over 24,000, but with many people missing, from native citizens to tourists, it's likely the number will rise even further.

Even half way around the world, seismic sensors in New York felt the reverbations of the earthquake. President Bush has pledged support to the countries, as other nations in the world has. Gothamist is very saddened by the news and we'll be sending some money to charities. You can donate to disaster relief funds through the American Red Cross or British charity Oxfam.

i wonder if any a-list celebs will step up for some kind of relief concert. this will surely take some time to deal with.

You've got to be kidding me. Tens of thousands (and more likely, many more) are dead, and you're wondering if there will be a "Live Aid 2"?

American World Service is also accepting disaster relief funds - http://www.ajws.org/

I was just wondering if there will be a celebrity outpouring of charity like there was after 9/11.

i'm not trying to triviliaze people's deaths here. i just wonder what type of outpouring of help there will be from people across the world.
