At Least It Was Entertaining

At around the time that Peyton Manning broke the N.F.L. single season touchdown record, his younger brother Eli threw an interception that gave the Giants their eighth straight loss, this one by 23-22 to the Cincinnati Bengals. Eli Manning is now 0-6 as the Giants starting quarterback.

On the previous drive the Giants allowed Bengal quarterback Jon Kitna to complete a 19-yard pass to receiver T.J. Houshmandzadeh on fourth-down and 10 to set up the winning score. Houshmandzadeh, whose name is so long they have to use a smaller font on his jersey, was double covered, but managed to make the play anyway. Two plays later, Kitna found a wide open Chad Johnson in the end zone for the winning margin. It was a mystery that Johnson, who has a mouth full of gold teeth, could be so wide open.

The Giants got the ball back in Cincinnati territory after yet another solid Willie Ponder kick return. Unfortunately that was soon followed by the Manning pick and the game was over. A couple of positives were the continued improvement of Manning and another good game from Tiki Barber who ran for 109 yards and a score. The biggest positive for Giants fans had to be that the game was watchable in comparison to some of the eggs that they’ve laid over this eight-game slide. There are some, however, who think this game was worse than the blowouts.

The biggest killer for the Giants was coming away with field goals instead of touchdowns. Although the Giants scored on six consecutive possessions, five were field goals by Doug Christie. A false start penalty on Luke Pettigout helped force the Giants to settle for a field goal late that might have given them better than a five point cushion.

Also can we stop talking about how great it is that the Giants are playing hard and not giving up? These guys are only multimillionaires who work once a week. Give us a break.

Hey, am I the only one who notices that Pettigout is himself responsible for enough false start penalty yards to make it to the moon and back? This has often KILLED them in crucial game situations, and he's been doing it a hell of a lot since he started his pro career with the team.

I used to hope that it was just a rookie mistake and that he'd grow out of it, but he hasn't stopped or even gotten better over the years. Even Coughlin acknowleges that it's baffling for a veteran to make such a bone-headed mistake in a critical situation like that.

It's not baffling to me. It's something he does consistently. No one ever comments on this, no sports beat writer has lost their patience - but maybe Accorsi will make a move in the offseason.

(actually, we need a whole new O-line in the offseason. And we've needed it for 2 + years now)

i remember in a pro football weekly draft guide (you have to take all of those with a grain of salt, but pfw was pretty good), it said that pettigout had feet like two cement blocks. i remember my friends laughing at the pick after we read his profile. as a giants fan, i just shook my head.

There's been hardly progression in Petitgout's game since his second season. And for some reason, we expect him to anchor the line season after season. This fat Irishman must go.

I do have faith in Snee, though. I think the kid's a keeper.

tien: lol

I think two cement blocks would at least slow the pass-rushers on the way to the QB better than some of these guys.

want salt on the wound? look at Petitgout's paycheck. last i checked top 5 on the roster. along with shaun williams...
our corners, safeties and receivers look like they're trying hard every week, they just lack youth or talent. or both.
tiki deserves a medal. and i may eat these words but eli is the future of this team.
