New 'Za on Carmine

2004_10_joes.jpgGothamist was just as saddened as most of New York City that Joe's Pizza had to move from its historic Carmine & Bleecker corner location. Luckily, since the original pizzeria shut down, Joe's fans only have to hustle up the street to the corner of Carmine & 6th Avenue for their slice fix.

But, Gothamist has learned that the newly ensconced Joe is going to be facing some new Carmine Street competition: The La Villa brothers behind Numero 26, the hoppin' soccer-themed antipaso/wine bar, have opened a brick oven pizza joint next door, aptly named Numero 28. The menu promises hand-crafted pies with topping combos like Zucchini, Asparagus, Lemon and Red Onions, and Pear, Gorgonzola, Mozzarella and Walnuts...Not exactly Joe's typical offerings of Pepperoni or Mushrooms...

Somehow, we think that Carmine Street's pizza diversity might be a good thing for 'za lovers all the way around. Abbondonza!

"Zucchini, Asparagus, Lemon and Red Onions, and Pear, Gorgonzola, Mozzarella and Walnuts"

i've heard from the owner of vegetable garden around the corner that the old joe's is going to reopen as another pizza place.

Clarification - I was citing two different pie topping combos - 1. Zucchini, Asparagus, Lemon and Red Onion, and 2. Pear, Gorgonzola, Mozzarella and Walnuts. Thought the "and," would distinguish between the two. Throwing both collections of toppings together would be a definite "yick" in my humble opinion. But, that isn't Numero 28's intention on their menu anyway.

"' 'za " has now pulled into neck and neck running in the odious horse race of inane unnecessary NYC slang, although it will only "show" against the twin Brooklyn geographic/realty titans of "Billyburg" and "The Slope" in the race for linguistic twitdom.

The day I go out for a slice of 'za is the day you can pry this gun from my cold dead hands. Please stop.

Ate there tonight, they just opened today. The manager was passing out samples on the street as we walked by looking for a place that was open on Christmas Eve. We had proscuitto/arugula/tomato/parmesan and a pear/gorgonzola/walnut. Pizzas were half price tonight. A few opening night problems, like only one dessert item -- nutella pizza, but worth going back.

'za is a midwesterner term. I grew up here and a slice is a slice and a pizza is a while pie. 'za is just wrong. I never heard 'za until I was a junior at Columbia and a frat buddy from Ohio used it.

Now as far as Joe's, glad to see they will at least still be in business-but I can't count how many times I had a slice there when I was a teenager, as a college student, and into my 20's coming back or going to a show or to visit a friend, or on the way to or back from a bar or a party...
