Coolfer's Pixies-Free Music Picks

Enough about the Pixies already. No need to mention them in this column. They're awesome, they're in town, they played on Letterman last night. Enough said.

There are a few Rebecca Gates fans out there, no? Any Spinanes fans? She's at the Mercury tonight with Cub Country (featuring ex-Jets to Brazil bassist Jeremy Chatelain), the Rosebergs and Johnny Hi-Fi.

It's sold out, but if you can score a ticket, go see Broken Social Scene at the Bowery Ballroom tonight. Coolfer saw them on Monday and will personally vouch for the hotness if the Toronto-based band's latest swing through our city.

Speaking of blasts from the past, Evan Dando of Lemonheads fame is playing Northsix tomorrow night.

50wave.jpgAnd yet another name from the days of "Post Modern MTV": Kristin Hersh of Throwing Muses fame. Her latest band, 50 Foot Wave (pictured), also includes Muses' bassist Bernard Georges. They've got a new business model. Rather than hook up with a label, the band and its manager have sold their CD directly to record stores around the country (credit cards accepted!) and have sold their music online. They plan on releasing an EP every nine months. Total DIY. And best of all, 50 Foot Wave rock. They're opening for the you-know-whos at the Hammerstein on Saturday, but go see them at the Mercury Lounge on Friday.

On Friday, the Housing Works Used Book Cafe will host a performance by Rachel Yamagata, Laurie & John Stirratt (Wilco) and Kieran McGee. Tickets are $25 and can be purchased at the bookstore.

Drag City's Christmas Party is at the Bowery Ballroom on Saturday and Sunday. It's going to be different. First of all, everybody is being asked to wear a sweater with a knit cap or scarf. (That would be something special if this were LA, but I have a feeling that'll be the standard attire anyway.) Second, the three artists are going to play short sets and everybody will rotate. In the rotation are (smog), Joanna Newsom and Weird War.

The Scissor Sisters suffer from Fun Lovin' Criminals Syndrome: They are more likely to attract a crowd of screaming teenagers in countries other than their own. In New York, though the band's home town, they can attract a pretty sizable crowd. They're playing the Hammerstein on Sunday. Louisville-based VHS or Beta will open. Prepare to be glammed.

Note to all single men: Go see Elefant at the Bowery Ballroom on Monday. You'll never see more good looking women at a hipster indie rock show in your entire life. Yep, singer Diego Garcia can really bring in the women. Elefant's label is now going through big ol' major label Hollywood Records, so singer Diego Garcia is now part of the Disney family. Opening band The Prosaics are one of the latest signings of Matador Records, which is not part of the Disney family.

Also:

- Turing Machine/Measles Mumps Rubella at Rothko (Insound party) tonight
- Leona Naess at the Living Room tonight

The Pixies are overrated. They started the boring category of college alt rock. Big fucking deal. Respect to the true innovators such as Joy Division, Suicide, and Velvet Underground.

lighten up dude.

pixies show last night kicked much azz. even made it home in time for their "second encore" on Letterman.

You bother to mention Evan Dando, and yet completely ignore the Juliana Hatfield show at Southpaw last night? Well, it was good. She talked about how much she loves Brooklyn, and you missed it. Ha!

besides Williamsburg is pretty much played out, Park Slope is the new b'berg!

Southpaw has as much vibe as a concrete wall. Hipsters aside (which leaves not too much), WB blows away the Slope. Unless you're into vanilla pudding bars and people.

I thought that comment could stand on it's own without need for a sarcasm tag or irritating smiley, but I guess not.

So, K23, do you have a sense of humor at all, or does absolutely everything piss you off on a deeply personal level?

Both places are fine, fun sometimes, whatever, you know make your own fun (you might need lessons)

PS - I DO like vanilla pudding bars you bigot!

It's cool to be ironic, didn't you know? But I guess you've been hanging out in malls too much as you appreciate the mediocrity of the Slope. Nevertheless, I do indeed have fun ripping apart average people such as yourself. But I guess I'm the bigot for appreciating good music and eclectic neighborhoods. Condemn me to a night at Southpaw with some rockin' crap bands and an ugly audience!

OK, well, good luck with that.

he's lives in the WB, hates the Slope, Pixies, and vanilla pudding.

ladies & gentlemen, I give you K23...
..the coolest man alive.

what more do you need to know?

K23, I see you're continuing blogging's long tradition of omitting your email address or URL when flaming on people. How nice.

But I'll say this on your behalf: You're absolutely right, we should give credit only to the true innovators. That's why next week's post will be a tribute to Muddy Waters, Robert Johnson, Howlin' Wolf and Sonny Boy Williamson. I'm sure they're all a part of your album collection.

Coolfer> You're a fucking dork. You spend countless hours writing about the music scene only to have Modest Mouse in your top albums of the year. Get a life. What are you going to do with my e-mail, nerd? Bring it on, blogger! Your inflated sense of self-importance amuses me.

Jamie> How original! Are you studying to be a writer?

Nice plug for Broken Social Scene. If you haven't seen them, do. They're awesome, original, Canadian and cool--it's about time Gothamist noticed them! But we're lucky, in Toronto you can still catch them playing for free at random outdoor venues....

hey Gothamist, I was really hoping for a review of the Pixies show from you guys! Other helpful info for those of us going this week -- what time do doors REALLY open, is it a madhouse to get in, etc.

Peace and vanilla pudding for all!

Molly> Glad to see someone with a fucking clue. What's the latest with Godspeed?

Cath> Save your money! Go see a real band! Unless you dig reunions with fat fucks on stage milking the audience to pay for their incense addictions.

Broken Social Scene: C'mon guys, SIX guitars and you still can't rock the house? I expected a lot more with that kind of firepower.

K23: why don't you save ALL your money and just wait for your favorite bands to appear on the OC?

Zing!! Good one.
