Splish Splash, Martinez to Join Mets

Looks like the initial talks of Pedro Martinez joining the Mets are now becoming more of a possibility. Baseball executives are saying that the Mets are close to signing the 33 year-old right hander to a guaranteed 4 year $56 million contract. Omar Minaya can finally say he got his man. The length of the contract could be what ends up biting Minaya in the butt. With recent injuries, his small frame, and a reported loss of speed in his fast ball, you have to wonder if Martinez will break down sometime during the contract.

While the Mets have yet to announce anything about Martinez, Larry Lucchino told the AP via e-mail, "He will be missed, and we are disappointed to have lost him to the Mets and the National League." Martinez last pitched for the National League with the Expos in 1997. During the 2004 regular season, he went 3-0 in four games against NL teams with a 1.93 ERA. He was 16-9 with a 3.90 ERA on the season.

Good for Mets? Bad for Mets? Great for Yankees who can only face him twice in the season now? Ignoring the actual baseball aspects of this deal, this is going to be great! The way Pedro blabbers is going to be New York tabloid gold.

Lets Go mets!

We need to enrgize this team a little more. Perhaps not $56 million, but I guess we have to go with market conditions.

No way. Too much for too little. And he's got an attitude problem way out of control.

Pedro will be awesome for the Mets. The NL never could hit Pedro and now he's back to dominate it.

Pedro will be a bust. He's still a good pitcher, but way past his prime. His shoulder is on the verge of blowing out. Minaya paid way too much for him and Met fans will regret it big time.
