This week NYC embraces the loud and the strange, in the form of influential post punk band the Pixies. Tonight Gothamist is heading over to Hammerstein for the show. One of the bands many this week, and the only one we're attending.
The first time we heard this band was on a mix tape made for us by a friend to listen to while at the gym. Where Is My Mind? became an internal soundtrack for both on and off the treadmill (um, mostly off). It served as a big giant window that opened up to a whole new world of music. If this mix tape had never been made we have no doubt that the Pixies would have found their way inside our head sometime down the road, but we all have to have our stories about the first time we heard them. And why we're spending $50 to see them now, years and years later.
Ben Brown has the best Pixies story we've ever read. What's your story? Let us know.
Don't have tickets for the shows? You can catch them on this 2 1/2 hour dvd, circa 1988 [released this year], or try Craigslist.

Saw them in Boston on Thursday. It was everything any fan could have expected, a huge love-fest. To me, it was like seeing the Beatles or the Clash, because (like them) this was a band I thought I would never see play live. And because their catalog is so strong, they have no new CD to promote, and they play 1 1/2 hour sets, there is no low point the entire show. Go see them if you can at all manage to do so.
i saw them in camden last weekend and I'm going tonight.
although the shows are "sold out", ticketmaster released additional tickets and they are still available through ticketmaster.com.
As exciting as seeing the Dead play. They have always had zero stage presence and still don't. Kim Deal, lay off the H, so you can play a decent bass line. Saw them play the Ritz and open for u2, were just as boo-ring.
Amazing band, but if you are short on $50, listen to your records. You aren't missing much.
gothamist, i will see you there!
saw them in ottawa and have very mixed feelings about the show - played all the "hits", which was great, but absolutely zero electricity in the house. maybe it would just be too mind blowing if they scored ten in both areas.
i'd still recommend going to see the show.
saw them sunday. they're still better than 99% of the new bands. unfortunately no "Alec Eiffel" or "Break My Body"...sad.
You guys are the 63326 best, thanks so much for the help.
