Village Openings

We noticed this sign walking down 8th Street between 5th and 6th Avenues in the Village the other day and were perplexed. Fresh food nirvana? On this block? You've got to be kidding. There isn't anything resembling "fresh food" or "nirvana" on that stretch of 8th Street (well, with the possible exception of Gray's Papaya, depending upon how you feel about hot dogs). But last night, we saw some activity inside. Peering in, we saw a clean, small brightly colored cafe, and one of the women inside unlocked the door to let us in. We were immediately engulfed with the aroma of curry and cardamom -- it smelled delightful. They're officially opening today, serving a menu of Indian flatbread sandwiches, and we'll be stopping by later to check it out. Full report next week.

Also noticed in the 'hood: more barbecue! Hooray! We spotted a sign for Bone Lick Park BBQ on Greenwich Avenue near 7th Ave., and despite our concern about the ridiculous (and not-so-family-friendly) name, we certainly hope that the 'cue is good.

I used to eat at that Gray's Papaya all the time until they put up the sign (I paraphrase) "bite into the pink saline flesh." Now all I can think about is sunburned Germans on a beach vacation in Tunisia. Really unpalatable.

I was on 8th st this afternoon and was equally surprised to find anything like this in the area. The place is beautifully designed. The people working there were very sweet and the food was just what I was in the mood for. They forgot to put onions on my order, which I honestly didn't even notice until I paid and they gave me a free veggie sandwhich to make up for it!! If you're in the area and are in the mood for relatively cheap and good food for lunch, definitely check it out.

I had dinner here over the weekend. I live in the area and was so excited for BBQ. Sadly, I was very disappointed. I got the ribs, mac and cheese and candied yams, and all were flavorless. The ribs were just smoky without any real flavor. Disappointing.

Von Singh's seems to be closed now.. that was fast? any idea what happened?

The lunch specials are very enticing but the food is awful. I got the pulled pork and my friend got the ribs - both were a big disappointment. They made a few mistakes on our check and when we brought this to their attention they were very, very rude and charged us extra for the drinks. Instead of arguing we left and will never return. This ain't no Virgils!
