Eliot Spitzer Tries Humor

NY State Attorney General Eliot Spitzer managed to raise about $3 million at a fundraiser lunch in Manhattan, a few days after announcing he was going to run for Governor in 2006. One of Spitzer's platforms will be his attempts to reform Albany, but the NY Times notes that he's trying to seem more warm and fuzzy, too.

He tried to address both issues in his speech, offering, for example, a jaundiced view of New York's government but suggesting that the state was in terrible shape because its leaders rely on the principles of Homer, which included, "It was that way when I got here; that's a good idea, boss; and the third is 'cover for me.'"
He was, he added, referring to Homer Simpson, not the epic poet.

Gothamist likes our government officials to be familiar with pop culture, but we don't want them to know that much. Hopefully, it's just his speechwriters who are watching the same Simpsons episode for the 10th time.
