Bad Casting Move: Mischa Barton In The Decameron

Almost a decade ago, Gothamist had to tackle reading Boccacio's The Decameron for Columbia's Literature Humanities class in the Core Curriculum. And now, we realize that nothing is sacred as we hear that Mischa Barton is going to be the new movie adaptation of The Decameron, playing Pampinea. The Decameron involves bawdy tales of young, beautiful and wealthy people right after the Black Death, and we understand why producer Dino De Laurentiis wants to adapt it. But frankly, we might welcome the Black Death before we see freaking Mischa "More Wooden Than Your Average Tree" Barton in a period piece.

We'll stick to the fun adaptation that Pasolini did of The Decameron in the 1970s. Brown University has a great website about The Decameron and Boccaccio Decameron on Amazon. And speaking of Columbia's core curriculum, check out David Denby look at the core, Great Books.

Don't hate on Mischa! If I recall correctly (I slept the day we discussed this book in Lit Hum) everyone gets it on. I'd love to see some Mischa Barton action.

Oh, everyone does get it on, but I have no desire to see Mischa get it on. Way too skinny.

Yay for Columbia undergrad alums who are running Gothamist! It pleased my heart to no end to read about Lit Hum during my daily blog jaunt today. Oh, those days, reading the Decameron, making fun of the 'Nard...

Pampinea! Best name ever. I think I'll name my first kid that....

Decameron who? My college lit. goes as far as Lord of the Flies and that's about it. :(

did gothamist really go to columbia? did gothamist really have to tackle reading Boccacio's The Decameron? are these weird questions? if so, don't you think it's weird to say "gothamist did this, gothamist did that"? i love your content and your site but using gothamist instead of I or we is really really starting to creep me out.

Given your interest in the Core, I thought you'd might like this reference from yesterday's Chronicle of Higher Education:

>A glance at the fall issue of "Peer Review":
Students' voices needed in general-education reform

No matter how colleges reform general education, the changes are unlikely to have much effect on students unless the students themselves are involved in designing their studies, say two
officials at Pennsylvania State University at University Park, Jeremy Cohen, associate vice provost for undergraduate education
and a professor of communications, and Eric R. White, executive director of undergraduate studies.

"At best, most students consider general education an obstacle to be gotten out of the way as soon as possible on a mad dash to
major courses," they write. "At worst, they consider it a devious plot on the part of colleges and universities to ensure
that unpopular and irrelevant courses are filled."

reader, Goth has been using our "we" convention for a while, so get used to it!

And at least part of Gothamist did go to Columbia.
