When Cold Fronts aren't Cold

west 83rd st. wind vaneAin't this turning out to be a nice day? The center of the storm that brought us all the rain yesterday is located way to our north. Did you hear the thunde r last night? Cold fronts aren't usually followed by warm air (hence the name), but the low was so far away that we're gettingwarm, dry air from the southwest. Just think, the air you're breathing today was exhaled by someone in Albuquerque a couple of days ago.

The wind should die down this evening. Tomorrow won't be quite as warm as today, but it should be sunny for most of the day. Friday is looking to be a rain fest.

Are there seemingly out of place weather instruments in your neighborhood? Gothamist enjoys the random sightings of thermometers, rain gauges and wind vanes like this inexplicable beauty atop a battered kiosk on West 83rd St. We don't know why the kiosk or wind vane are there but they brighten our day whenever we pass by (we are weather geeks, afterall).

  • I live on that street, and I vividly remember the day that a junkie climbed up that kiosk and stole the old weather vane in the middle of the afternoon in broad daylight. This new one magically appeared on day and has been there ever since. I don't know who put it there...
