Suspect In The Sarah Fox Murder?

Yesterday, the Post revealed the top suspect in the Sarah Fox murder was actually a neighbor who had been giving the police tips. The murder of Fox, a Juilliard student whose body was found in Inwood Park last May, worried the neighborhood about park safety (Fox had been going for a run). Dimitri Sheinman had told police he had "visions" that could help the police in the murder investigation, and the details he gave were reportedly "severely intimate" about facts that hadn't been disclosed to the public. District Attorney Robert Morgenthau confirmed that he was the top suspect, but there wasn't enough information to charge him. Sheinman, father of a three year-old and reeling from the coverage, angrily told news crews that he was innocent, also saying, "Just because you work for the media you think you can pester me? You are disgusting."

Dear New York Post: thank you so very much for either ruining an innocent (and from the sounds of it, already severely troubled) man's life, or increasing the chances that a vicious murderer will be able to slip the noose by turning the trial into a media circus. Either way, a job well done to your usual standards of journalistic excellence. I and my neighbors in Inwood salute you!

How do you know he didn't do it...after all, it wasn't the Post that called him the number one suspect- it was the DA.

Big difference.

I think it is severely dangerous of both the DA and the Post.

If this person is guilty, or if the cops had evidence linking him to the crime, then I'd be glad this is being brought out.

Since that's not the case, I think it is very very scary that the Post would put a picture of this man on the cover of their newspaper. C'mon folks, we know how this works...to the "average joe" this guy is now officially guilty. His life is ruined - at least if he wants to stay in this neighborhood.

What if it were you? What if you had tried to help the police? Sure, I read that he said some wacky things (and maybe he is guilty, I don't know) but if the cops say there is not enough evidence, then putting him up there as the NUMBER ONE SUSPECT (in caps, bold print) is the wrong thing to do.

Now, I'm not questioning the DA nor the cops motives for going public with this info- I'm not questioning it because I don't understand it either...
BUT, I must say that it would seem that releasing his name to the press without any evidence is setting yourself up to be sued...
My guess is that he is guilty, the DA's office knows he's guilty, but they're just lacking some key evidence right now.

you know, i didn't think it was possible for my opinion of the post to sink any lower, but... oh, man. what they've done is just disastrous, imho, on so many levels.

by the way, sherlock, morgenthau only confirmed the suspect's name after the post had its field day. big difference.

am i missing something here? although i think that it probably would have been remiss of the cops not to take this person into consideration, that the post would print his name, print his photo, lay the details of his life out for our consumption is stunningly irresponsible.

my thoughts are with fox's family and friends; i hope that this is resolved as quickly as possible and that justice is met (to the extent that that's possible). i just don't see how the post is helping that process in any way. if anything it's doing the opposite. this community is simply more nervous and stirred up than it already was...

we all need to be vigilant about our safety, and we all need to look out for each other if we're truly to be a neighborhood, a community. but we also need to be careful about presuming guilt unless and until we know otherwise. we need to be careful about treating other people's lives as if they're just lurid soap operas for us to indulge in.
