Seasons Change

ne_vis_1201.jpgEven though tropical storm Otto has appeared on the scene, yesterday marked the official end of the hurricane season. What better way to usher it out than heavy rain and high winds? Isn't it ironic, don't you think? It will come as no surprise that the hurricane season was unusually active this year. While the hurricane season may have ended, today marks the beginning of winter! No, not astronomical winter which begins on the solstice, but climatological winter, or the three coldest months of the year. Yippee!

The cold front has passed, the rain has ended, and Gothamist sees the skies rapidly clearing. It'll stay windy for the rest of the day. Expect gusts over 50mph. The next couple of days should be chilly but pleasant.

The Sunday forecast is getting better. AccuWeather is now saying sunny to partly cloudy, high of 50. The Weather Service is sticking with partly cloudy and a high of 48, and weather.com believes it will be mostly sunny with a high of 52.

March probably feels colder because winter's been dragging on for several months by that point but December is about 5 degrees F colder.

While on the UWS this afternoon I saw a gust of wind almost overturn a loaded baby stroller.

  • I'm working on the 23rd floor, in front of a south-facing window, as I write this. It feels like the windows are going to blow in at any moment. But it does relieve the monotony. :>)

So the coldest months of the year are Dec, Jan and Feb? I would have guessed that March was colder on average than December. But I guess that's just the subjectivism talking.

I can't wait for the snow to arrive, so I can start my snow shoveling business. Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow!
