the place in the w. village that you (fred) may be thinking of is 'ino. It's at 21 Bedford Street. Also, there is of course 'inoteca as well, at the corner of ludlow & rivington.

paneantico on 93rd & 3rd ave in bay ridge makes some to die for heroes. highly recommended is the roast beef and fresh mozzarella with their mustard/garlic dressing. total yumminess.

Yup, the cubanos at Castillo de Jagua are great, but I think there are even better ones on Dyckman St in Inwood and also on St Nick and 184th. I've never found a hero in Manhattan that equals the heroes you can get in the Bronx and Broklyn. The insane rents prevent the delis from really giving you your money's worth with a super overstuffed hero. Blimpie's??? Surely you jest, to quote ODB, nigga please.

after several taste comparrisons, for me Saigon beats No. 1 hands down (but they're both great) best Cuban Sandwichs in NYC are at Spanish American on E 13th St. and Castillo De Jagua on Rivington (also a fan of Margon's version, the fried chorizo slice is tasty, but not traditional) and my favorite sub in the city is amazing Chicken Parm at Lazzara's in midtown. more info here: http://cityrag.blogs.com/main/2004/10/index.html#a0002364372

What's the name of that panini place in the W. village? You know, the really tiny one that's overpriced but SUPER delicious? I think it's on Greenwich st.

Best banh mi in the city's at a little (I mean tiny) place on Forsyth between Division and East Broadway. I can't remember it's name, but it's worth the trek. It's just behind one of the chinatown bus stands.

I prefer the gyros from the middle-eastern street stands - my personal favorite is the one at 47th and 6th, SW Corner.

Bahn Mi So 1 is one of my favorite places to grab a sandwich. The sugar drink is a bonus! I've only eaten there once, but Nicky's had a good sandwich. The bread is outstanding.

Margon (featured in the interactive part of the article), near Times Square, really does have the best Cuban sandwiches. (They also have cute flirts working behind the counter.)

My very favorite hero is the "Jimmy T" from Lenny's Cafe on Amsterdam. It's a delicious chicken cutlet, with grilled red onion, melted mozzarella, roasted sweet peppers, and honey mustard. I can honestly say it's the best tasting sandwich I've ever had.

i LOVE banh mi - but don't you worry about some of that meat? it tastes good, but i KNOW the ham/turkey are usually as stanky as blimpie...
