Coolfer's Thankgiving Weekend Music Picks

As is usually the case, the local concert schedule around Thanksgiving is a tad thin. Look at it this way: If you go out, you'll have a little extra elbow room. Or, look at it this way: If you go out, you may be seeing bands that are playing to half-empty rooms, and nobody likes to play to half-empty rooms.

Tonight, SOB's is hosting a special pre-Thanksgiving Day edition of Basement Bhangra. It's $12 with a flyer, $16 without. Also, The Flesh is playing the Motherfucker party at Discotheque.

Oak.jpgThere ain't a whole lot going on Thanksgiving night--other than a Nets/Clippers game that should be a complete bore. The one event almost worth mentioning is at Crobar: Paul Oakenfold will be spinning the Disgraceland party for the dwindling number of people who are still into British superstar DJs. The super, low, low GBH guest list ticket price is $40 (click here for details). Enjoy.

On Friday there are a few options. Bob Mould (Husker Du, Sugar) performs at Northsix. Japanther and USAISAMONSTER are at Tonic. If you feel up to a trek out to Maxwell's, Britt Daniel (Spoon) is performing.

By Saturday the city's clubs are nearly back to running at full speed. You've got Luna at Irving Plaza, ambient-noise rockers Neurosis at Northsix (sold out), Diplo spinning an array of styles at Rothko and Fiend of a Fiend (and seven other bands) tearing eardrums at Pianos.

On Tuesday, Webster Hall hosts an evening of rehashed riffs and fine-tuned rock 'n' roll poses compliments of The Donnas, The Datsuns and the Starlite Desperation.

Ooh, great ideas. And Tuesday's Webster Hall show should have a good number of The Donnas' fanboys present (I'm secretly fascinated with their fanboy legion).
