Gothamist's Div. 1A Top 15

Entering the holiday weekend, the few games that remain on the schedule could go a long way in shaping the bowl picture. Some of the BCS bowl slots are already decided, with a few still open. Most importantly, who will play in the national championship. There are five undefeateds, and while Utah has already finished their season undefeated, they look to be out of the title game no matter the outcome of the other games.

Riddle us this, if Utah plays the Big East title winner, does that put them on the national stage? Sure, they get the big bucks for the BCS Bowl, but does beating a undeserving team mean you're up there with the best?

1. Auburn – No blow-out this week, but that rarely happens in the Iron Bowl, especially considering Alabama was at home and has a great defense. One more game (SEC title game) for the Tigers and they can claim a perfect regular season.

2. Southern Cal – The Trojans finally get on national TV again this week as the Irish come to town...look for USC to try and make a statement.

3. Oklahoma – Beating a lowly team such as Iowa State in the Big 12 title game won’t prove much. Wouldn’t it be nice to have a playoff so Auburn, USC, Oklahoma, and others could decide the title on the field?

4. California – So long as they don’t take Southern Miss lightly, the Bears are headed to Pasadena, where they should score at will against Michigan.

5. Utah – Yes, the competition they faced wasn’t the best, but 11-0 is still very impressive. Urban Meyer is a very talented coach, if he ends up in Gainesville next year then watch out SEC.

6. Texas – Based on their play recently, expect a close game with Texas A&M.

7. Miami – In the wacky, balanced ACC, ‘Canes can win the conference with despite 2 losses if they can handle the Hokies – which they will since it is in the Orange Bowl.

8. Georgia

9. Louisville – Another rising star in the coaching profession: Bob Petrino.

10. Virginia Tech – Quietly enjoying a very solid year with only losses coming to USC and on a last second FG to NC State. Winning at Miami will be awfully tough however.

11. Michigan – Miserable performance vs. Ohio State. Still, UofM did beat Iowa earlier this year so that’s why we have them ranked above the Hawkeyes.

12. Iowa – Very impressive season considering early losses to Arizona State and Michigan and the number of players they had to replace from last year. This is a well coached, up and coming young team that will continue to be a force in the Big 10 as long as Kirk Ferentz is running the show.

13. Virginia

14. LSU

15. Boise State

I love it. Not one comment. Do any of the hipster/geeks who read blogs even know what football is? Seems like the two are worlds apart. Still, thanks for infusing some normalcy into our Thanksgiving wind up.

I hate reading this entry every week. Whoever is writing this knows nothing about college football and I wish she would stop. Thanks.

I was busy at work today. Normally, I complain about the list every week.

This week I won't complain, but I will add this: Auburn has already played SoCal last season and the season before. And the result, this Auburn juiced up their nonconference schedule with the Citadel and other crap teams.

I'm not entirely sure what Tien's trying to accomplish with this top 15. Just rehashing the BCS with some critical comments for good measure? Because I don't get how the Badgers hit No. 5, drops to No. 11 on a victory against an undefeated team, then drops off the list entirely after its second defeat of the season. Say what?
