since january 2003 the owner of brewery Ommegang is indeed Duvel Moortgat. However, Duvel Moortgat is definitely belgian, not german. At the moment it is the fifth largest brewer in Belgium.

cheers!

peejay, brussels.

Best store in the city for beers is Pioneer, not for cases but for one-offs of hard to find whatever. Completely ecclectic selection. 289 Columbus Ave, trust me.

Burp Castle on St. Mark's (right next to and owners of Brewsky's). Best Belgian beer selection in NYC, prob the US. They usually rotate VERY hard to find tripels, not just the Chimay or whatever typical "belgian" bars here have.

All that comes at a price - the most bizarro atmosphere ever. Watch out, the brewist monks go for the ankles.

Ommegang is brewed in Ommegang, New York and makes several varieties of belgian style beer. They make Hennepin too.

They are actually owned by Duvel, the german brewer now.

Here's another idea, perhaps demanding a re-think: your grocery store. There are some fine "Belgian style" ales brewed out of upstate NY. I've tried a couple which hit the spot, and I'm sure I'll butcher the spelling, so someone should feel free to correct me (on both spelling and matters of taste too, I guess). One is called something like Hennepin (?) and the other Om-something. Both come in those large Chimay-size bottles.

Don't forget about Bierkraft. Located on 5th ave. in Park Slope, Brooklyn. Take the 2/3 to Bergen. Tastings on Tuesdays at 7pm. Huge selection of Belgian beers.

Well, for beer lovers in Brooklyn, I have to recommend my favorite, Eagle Provisions, 628 5th Ave. between 17th & 18th.

Great selection from all over the world, with a huge selection of eastern european beers. I personally love the English bitters, in particular, Old Speckled Hen.

Try it, you'll like it.

I second Janine's recommend about American Beer Distributing on Court St. in Brooklyn. I have lived around the corner from it for 3 years now and they never cease to amaze me with their selection.
