Mmm..Beer

2004_11_ask_beer.jpgI'm new to New York, and I'm looking for quality beer.  I'm a fan of Belgian ales, and while there are plenty of resources on where to find fine wine in the city, I haven't had any luck tracking down sources for fine beer.  Any tips on stores in Manhattan that are well stocked?

We agree with you that there are few things better than a nice Belgian brew. According to the New York City Beer Guide website, there are numerous stores in Manhattan that carry Belgian and other fine beers and ales. The NYCBG experts list 14 recommended places, from uptown to downtown. A few that they mention: Associated Supermarket (on 2nd ave/48th street) has a better-than-average beer selection, including an extensive selection of French and Belgian beers; New Beer Wholesaler (Chrystie/Delancey) sells retail as well as wholesale and has good prices on cases; and New York Beverage Wholesalers (91st st/1st ave) has free delivery in Manhattan from 59th st. to 135th st. and will deliver anywhere in Manhattan for orders over $75.

We know you specified Manhattan, but we feel we would be remiss if we didn’t recommend American Beer Distributing (Thrifty American) on Court Street in Brooklyn. It’s easy to get to from Manhattan (just take the F train to the 3rd stop in Brooklyn - Bergen Street) and we love their selection, decent prices, and nice staff.

We hope you find your perfect Belgian ale at one of these places - Cheers!

not good ... but cheap...try grassroots on st. marks.

I second Janine's recommend about American Beer Distributing on Court St. in Brooklyn. I have lived around the corner from it for 3 years now and they never cease to amaze me with their selection.

Well, for beer lovers in Brooklyn, I have to recommend my favorite, Eagle Provisions, 628 5th Ave. between 17th & 18th.

Great selection from all over the world, with a huge selection of eastern european beers. I personally love the English bitters, in particular, Old Speckled Hen.

Try it, you'll like it.

Don't forget about Bierkraft. Located on 5th ave. in Park Slope, Brooklyn. Take the 2/3 to Bergen. Tastings on Tuesdays at 7pm. Huge selection of Belgian beers.

Here's another idea, perhaps demanding a re-think: your grocery store. There are some fine "Belgian style" ales brewed out of upstate NY. I've tried a couple which hit the spot, and I'm sure I'll butcher the spelling, so someone should feel free to correct me (on both spelling and matters of taste too, I guess). One is called something like Hennepin (?) and the other Om-something. Both come in those large Chimay-size bottles.

Ommegang is brewed in Ommegang, New York and makes several varieties of belgian style beer. They make Hennepin too.

They are actually owned by Duvel, the german brewer now.

oops, check that -- they are in cooperstown, ny

they have a kick ass brewery tour if you are up thataways

Burp Castle on St. Mark's (right next to and owners of Brewsky's). Best Belgian beer selection in NYC, prob the US. They usually rotate VERY hard to find tripels, not just the Chimay or whatever typical "belgian" bars here have.

All that comes at a price - the most bizarro atmosphere ever. Watch out, the brewist monks go for the ankles.

Sorry, B Castle is on 7th not St Mark's as the Brewsky's poster pointed out

Best store in the city for beers is Pioneer, not for cases but for one-offs of hard to find whatever. Completely ecclectic selection. 289 Columbus Ave, trust me.

happy deli at 48th and 8th is VERY good as well, but their prices suck. Great selection...

since january 2003 the owner of brewery Ommegang is indeed Duvel Moortgat. However, Duvel Moortgat is definitely belgian, not german. At the moment it is the fifth largest brewer in Belgium.

cheers!

peejay, brussels.
