It seems like Senator Schumer's decision to forego a gubernatorial run in 2006 is making local Democrats happy. And if there's anyone who needs some cheering up, it's Democrats in New York. Representative Anthony Weiner explains, "I think it helps those of us trying to get traction for the race against the most immediate Republican to not have the brutal run-up to a 2006 primary getting in the way." As in: Let's concentrate on beating Mayor Bloomberg. But critics say the Democrats need to establish who has the best chance of running against the billionaire Mayor. Gifford Miller? Fernando Ferrer (pictured)? Representative Weiner? At the moment, Gothamist is liking Ferrer, because he seems more seasoned (we're totally being age-ist) and down-to-earth (a former Bronx Borough president). And his race is definitely a plus for him, especially considering his other Democrat rivals may be a bunch of white guys.
Mayor Bloomberg happened to endorse Senator Schumer's reelection this past November.

Freddy Ferrer ought to come out TODAY and say he's dead set agains the stadium deal, or at least in favor of the referendum authorizing tax dollars for it. If he did that, it would put him square against the Mayor and create an up-or-down vote. It would also allow him to start putting together a list for his inauguration.
For goodness sake! Ferrer's race is caucasian. He is white. His ethnic or cultural background is Puerto Rican, which is a Spanish Catholic, African and Anglo-American mishmash brewed in the Caribbean.
As a Hispanic he is only slightly related to the new Senator from Colorado, Salazar, whose hue is an even pinkier white and whose family has been in the New Mexico / Colorado region since 1598 (way before the English Puritan pilgrims).
Hispanicity is not a racial category it is a cultural identity.
We knew what she meant by "race." Do you chastise people for mistakenly saying "Kleenex" when they are actually using an off-brand facial tissue? Talk about hair splitting.
But my friend, diluting the identity of Hispanics is no laughing matter. Come to my neighborhood and give that same explanation to our faces, and see the reaction you get! We have noticably different physical features (some more apparent than others). Are you blind?
Puhleeze... Freddy Ferrer is a hack NYC-machine politician who would be a disaster for the city. For the Dem candidates, it's Giff by a mile.
But for me it doesn't matter, I'm sticking with Bloomberg.
Hey New Yorkers!
On Monday a 20 year incumbent GOP Senator Nancy Larraine Hoffman called Democratic challenger Dave Valesky to concede defeat after a two week recount. Read NY Times Article.
Valesky’s win in the 49th Senate District (Onondaga, Madison, Oneida and Cayuga Counties) marks the third pick-up this year for Senate Democrats in the GOP-controlled New York State Senate and a major victory for progressive politics in upstate New York.
Valesky ran an aggressive grassroots campaign that drove home the cost we all pay for Albany dysfunction – from skyrocketing property taxes to a broken workers compensation system.
Dave’s victory is huge – but that’s not all - we still have a chance to pick up one more seat.
In Westchester County election day isn’t over yet: the recount
continues between Democrat Andrea Stewart-Cousins and Republican Nick Spano.
A win for both Dave and Andrea would mean we cut Joe Bruno’s GOP margin in half this year.
With your help we can make sure every vote is counted and win an extraordinary upset.
On election night, the tally had Andrea running 1674 votes behind Spano (out of over 104,000 cast). But then a strange thing happened. A recanvass of the voting machines revealed enormous errors – and the revised tally had Andrea only 9 votes down from Spano.
Now we are in the middle of counting nearly 9,000 absentee and paper ballots from across New York’s 35th Senate District. If the trend holds, Andrea will be on her way to Albany to shake up the New York State Senate.
Spano and the Republicans are trying to win Palm Beach style – by challenging every possible Democratic absentee and provisional ballot they can for any possible reason. The GOP’s highly paid lawyers are challenging every college student, every senior – any Democrat they can - trying to slow down the process, drive up the cost and win an election through disenfranchisement.
We cannot let this happen!
