The Great White North: It's Torontoist

2004_11_torontoist.jpg

Gothamist crossed the pond last week with the beta launch of Londonist, and this week, we go north to a country that's been looking better and better to some of our readers: Welcome, Torontoist. Edited by Joshua Errett and Sarah Lazarovic, Torontoist is our first endeavor to truly make Gothamist a North American operation. Recent posts have included how Jersey boy Kevin Smith is filming in town and how Canada's Health Minister doesn't want Internet pharmacies with Canadian connections to ship to the U.S. Here at Gothamist, we look forward to posts about Degrassi and the exodus of Canadian comedic talent south. Never has socialized health care look so good!

And, also, from the Publisher: With the addition of Torontoist, Gothamist is now in seven cities in the United States, the United Kingdom, and Canada. We have received many suggestions on what cities to target next, and we wanted to share some plans with you. When we consider a new city, we look at regional population, internet penetration, age demographics, and strength of media community (as measured by the number of newspapers, magazines, and blogs).

Recently, we've also begun to consider non-English speaking cities. Based on all of this thinking, we have two announcements:

1. Our next three cities will be Philadelphia, Seattle, and Boston. If you live in one of these cities, and are interested in being the editor or a contributor at one of these sites, please email Jake. Launch will be in the next couple of months.

2. Gothamist is looking for bilingual lead editors in Tokyo and Paris for Japanese and French language sites. If you are interested, email Jake.

What about SanFranciscoist?

You guys are so predictable.

What is next BOSTONIST?

we already have an SFist!

Why not just cut to the chase and just start Yuppist and Foodist.

Maybe instead of launching all of these different websites, you should work on the content of the ones already in place. Gothamist used to be a breath of fresh air, but I've seen a steady decline in both the writing and coverage of this site as of late, not to mention the jarring amount of typos I see on a weekly basis. To paraphrase a well-worn saying, Jack of all cities, master of none.
