Controversy or not, the final bid for New York City's bid for the 2012 Olympics is in. The 600 page proposal covers every detail of the City's bid and is due to the International Olympic Committee on Monday. The bid, which has events all over NYC, including Fresh Kills landfill as a mountain bike site, is not without controversy. It hinges on the new West Side stadium for the Jets which would serve as the Olympic Stadium. A recent Quinnipiac University poll, however, found that 64% of New Yorkers support the bid, with 30% opposed.
The most brilliant thing about yesterday's photo op, besides the Brooklyn Bridge of course, is that it was staged on Veteran's Day, a school holiday. That's how you get throngs of kids to wave little NYC 2012 flags. And how does Bob Beamon run with torch-like the bid in his hand? Doesn't it get all crumply with the running and stuff?

congratz tien and gothamist.
i knew you'd finally give Veteran's Day the exposure it warrants. one mention in one line of text (a day late nonetheless) is not only suitable but ultimately extreme in the coverage this day deserves. veteran's? screw the veteran's! critical mass, rnc protests, and beard papa's - now that's sexy. veteran's are so bland by comparison.
great job!!!!!!
hey thanks evil! good job reading so carefully.
oh, and as far as screw the vets, that's exactly the sentiment we were going for.
hey tien, sorry if i came off too harsh. that was not my intention.
for lack of a better word, i just feel really disheartened at the lack of coverage you guys have shown towards yesterday's parade and holiday. that's it. no more. no less.
have a good one.
This isn't the NY Times. It's a blog and they can cover whatever they feel like. Sheesh. Give them a break...
But i it was some stupid Hipster Blog photographer protest with bout 5 people there , Gothamist would cover it in full force . Shows their true colors . This site has sucked latelt anyway ... gone down hill ... Gothamist was once a great site for the everyday new yorker to read and enjoy . Too bad it has become a hipster / artist / liberal site ... o well .. all good things mu...................
Look, let's face the reality about Gothamist. Old people who fought for wars and freedoms are not of their concern. Yes they are probably the people who are losing homes and benefits thanks to the cost of living in NYC going through the roof. But they will never be a "foodie".
Yes, that sounds bitter. And it is. But regardless of politics, people should really show respect to people who have made sacrifices to serve this country regardless of who is in charge. It's amazing how many bullshit events Gothamist covers, yet they can't spend one second on Veteran's Day.
And this whole Olympic bid nonsense? I have not met anyone who I grew up with in this city who thinks it's a good idea. This city falls to shit if one building collapses or one train line is backed up. The Olympics? Give us all a break.
The whole bridge stunt was just that. A stunt. And publicity for an event that New York should lose so the money could be spent for real needs.
