The Rockefeller Center Christmas tree is up, and thus begins the semi-official start of the holiday season and throngs and throngs of tourists - from far away and near - to Midtown. On November 16, next Tuesday, a special Swarovski-designed star will be topping the tree, and the official tree lighting ceremony is on November 30. Think 30,000 lights being put on by a dozen electricians! You have some time to build up your strength for visiting the tree, because the crowds are unbelievably fierce in wanting to see the tree. Gothamist can't blame them, because seeing the tree in the middle of skyscrapers and the bustle can be magical.

yay! the tree! i love xmas lights, but have only seen the tree at rockefeller once as a little, little kid.
For those of us who work in the area, this marks the beginning of the Season of Hell. Pretty soon, you won't be able to move on 5th avenue with all of the gawping hicks walking at the slowest possible speeds. I know we need their money, but I need to run errands on my lunch hour.
Ah! The Rockefeller Center Christmas tree! Crowds at every hour and barricades to keep you back, back, back.
question: does anyone know how long the tree stays up after Christmas? a friend from out of town wants to come and visit me in January, but wants to know if the tree will still be up. reasonably, I suppose.
