On the Bumpy Road to Winter

bentley_sm.jpgThis morning wasn't quite as cold in the city as anticipated. JFK and Newark Liberty airports both set record lows, reaching down to 28 degrees. The LaGuardia and Central Park temperatures were low, but not record low. On Long Island, Islip smashed their record low. It got down to 21 degrees –eight degrees below the previous record set in 1993. Congratulations Islip!

Clouds move in tonight and the wind will start coming from the south. Tomorrow should be warmer. Friday looks to be an ugly Fall day, cold, cloudy and rainy. Cool and sunny for the weekend.

Gothamist is slowly warming to the cold weather. Our hot chocolate consumption has started to increase! We also received the latest Vermont Snowflakes catalogue yesterday. Vermont Snowflakes is the official distributor of Wilson "Snowflake" Bentley reproductions and collectibles. Bentley pioneered the art of snow microphotography –taking photographs of snowflakes- from his farm in northern Vermont. Every year or two Gothamist makes a journey to see a collection of his photographs in the Old Red Mill in Jericho. Vermont Snowflakes offers a variety of limited edition prints, ornaments, jewelry, books and other items related to Bentley and his beautiful snowflake photographs. Proceeds from the sales help preserve Bentley's original glass plate negatives. These make excellent gifts for yourself or the weather weenie in your life (not that Gothamist is hinting or anything…).

Funny, I check this site every now and then, today I look and the Old Red Mill is right there. I grew up near that Mill and use to show still lifes there. How weird, it's been years since I've been back, but I recognized it instantly.

Ya know, Gothamist could at least -try- to disguise the paid messages in their posts. It's getting more and more ridiculous.

I guess it does read like an ad. That wasn't my intent, but sometimes these posts get put together rather hastily. I literally did get the catalogue yesterday and thought Gothamist weather fans might be interested.
