its a shame how people immediately say things like "yuck" or "gross" or just call people "uncivilized" for their taste in food. the roast pig in my culture is called lechon. it is typically cooked when you're celebrating a major event, like a marriage or a birthday. by cooking the best meat you have, and possibly the ONLY meat you have, this particularly applies to poorer asian countries, is a way to showing welcome to your guests, even if it means you'll be starving again for the next several months. by providing the best you have is wishing good blessing upon the celebrants. ignorance is bliss; but, it makes you stupid. don't knock it til you've tried it.

the only way i imagine that could possibly OFFEND anyone is if you look at the pig's face and it somehow remarkabely resembles your own. well, then, i can understand. it's embarrassing being on a platter like that all juicy and plump and ready-to-eat.

I like meat (pigs are such magical animals -- so many delicacies from one animal), but I do have a strict "no face" policy when the item reaches my table.

grow up people. would u be able to sleep better if that pig was in the form of a hot dog in a bun? or chopped up in your soup? or pulled and slopped with brown/red bbq sauce goo? would that be hipper to your taste? on another note, i've seen some of that vegetarian crap they call "fake meat" and it LOOKS like dung, but i don't go saying it's uncivilized or say juvenile things like "oh man, meat eating sure looks better after i've seen that bogus crap"

Jen just wants you to "pig out." (See the forthcoming volume of the Historical Dictionary of American Slang.) I just got back from the first annual Asia Pacific Food Expo in Singapore. You foodies would have loved it. Lots of free samples. Dim sum for only a dollar or two. Dishes with names like "Buddha Jump Over the Wall" and "Goat's Milk Candy" and "Misai Kuching (cat's whiskers) Organic Herbal Tea."

I agree with astrid--that pig looks seriously yummy. It's not the kind of thing that I'd eat every day, but when you want to indulge, it's hard to beat that.

Uhh... the civilized world? The last time I checked, NYC foodies were still fawning over lardo pizza at Otto or bacon-wrapped dates at the tapas-place-of-the-moment. It's the same animal, people. I think it looks awesome, and I think anyone who has never been to a pig roast has missed out on some seriously good eating. Go on, deprive yourselves.

I agree, that is just awful. I was watching some of the never-ending pig cooking shows on the food channel and couldn't help but notice how the people resembled what they were eating. Not only were they grossly overweight, but their faces looked like pigs as well. When Iron Chef came on it made the Americans look pathetic.
