McGreevey Resigns Alone

NJ Governor James McGreevey resigned yesterday, three months after he announced he was a gay American and was stepping down. Interestingly, he spoke alone, without his wife, Dina, or parents by his side as they had been during his announcement in August; instead, his backdrop were just huge blow-ups of photographs of him being governor, including one of him with Christopher Reeve. McGreevey, who gave America a new catch phrase ("I am a gay American"), said, "I am not apologizing for being a gay American, but rather, for having let personal feelings impact my decision-making and for not having had the courage to be open about whom I was." He didn't give any insight into what he might be doing in his new life, though the NY Times says that he might want to pursue working on issues "dear" to him, like stem cell research and gay rights. Gay rights? McGreevey never seemed that supportive of gay rights.

The Star-Ledger has an extensive section on McGreevey, including some investigative reporting on his governorship. And speaking of gays, the NY State Supreme Court ruled that Mayor Bloomberg must carry out a law that he vetoed and the City Council overrode - one that requires businesses the city works with to provide domestic partner benefits.

I have a feeling Jim will be back in the spotlight politically somewhere, somehow.

The best part of this is that his story is the basis for tomorrow's Law & Order episode.
