An informal poll of 50 residents and business owners has the NY Post claiming that "petty thieves and drug users [are tying] to reclaim the streets after more than a decade of plummeting crime rates." After welcoming the gentrification, it seems like people are experiencing more muggings, house break-ins, violent assaults, and crack vials on the sidewalks than they would expect, given the quickly gentrifying neighborhood. One woman tells the Post, "I've seen it clean up and get better, but now crime is going back up. I was mugged last year right in front of my building, and a week later, my friend was mugged. It's scary." But the problem may lie in the gentrification, since people are feeling more secure and therefore may not be as careful in locking up and watching out. Police also say that more people need to report crimes, in order for them to catch the criminals.
Curbed notes that the Post also had a feature about babies overtaking Williamsburg - baby, meet the neighbor criminal! And for more Williamsburg: Free Williamsburg and Billburg.

my van was broken into and trashed a little over a year ago while it was parked on kent ave., right where you photographer took the header pic (kent btw. n7th & n8th, if i'm not mistaken). what a coincidence. glad i moved.
wait, it's n8th looking towards kent. but that's right where my van was parked. weird.
That's a nice photo... you should credit the photographer.
To get all the information you want on Williamsburg check out www.blockmagazine.com and a future feature about raising a family in Williamsburg and Greenpoint on November 19th.
I used to cop in Williamsburg years ago and it was the worst war zone in New York. This doesn't surprise me. These trust fund babies are easy pickins.
That's a nice photo... you should credit the photographer.
If you think crime is on the rise in Billyburg, you should come (or maybe not) to Red Hook: a resurgence in crack and petty thieves areabound- not to mention a few hooded car jackings in the past few days.
Haven't read about it in the papers? Perhaps Ikea's people are afraid of scaring potential customers or something. . .
from the Hook
Completely agree about Red Hook. To hear about stuff like that, just pick up your local free newspaper and read the police blotter.
But Williamsburg? C'mon! It's easier pickin's than Park Slope. It's actually not that big of an area physically, but if you know the streets and know how to get away from the scene you can rip anyone off without too much skills. Everyone knows the area is filled with trust fund brats who have no clue how to operate on their own. It's just too easy.
Remember the main reason Williamsburg became popular was because it's close by subway to the city. Otherwise, it's not a safe place and somewhat isolated. And hey, everyone who owns an iPod should make sure we can see those white headphones. I mean, it's not like someone can tell you have one and then mug you for it, right?
