Yikes - a man raped a cellphone store employee in Greenpoint yesterday. Newsday reports that around 2:30PM, the rapist forced the employee at Platinum Wireless (117 Meserole Avenue) to the backroom, threatening her with a gun. Afterwards, he stole a number of cellphones. The employee, who was the only one in the store at the time, called the manager, who then called the police. Gothamist thinks the rapist is one gutsy mofo - the police station is one block away!

well, i've got to say that this is more than a little disturbing.
i hope living even closer to the police station than the store will help.
Actually, crime rates tends to be higher around police stations. When suspects are released, they often commit crimes nearby.
(I know it's counterintuitive, you'd think they'd wait till they were far from the station...)
that is extremely disturbing. i think reading in the news of any woman being raped is awful. i hope they catch the guy.
The post had a story yesterday about a convicted and registered sex offender that was dating a girl and then raped her when she turned down his advances. very disturbing.
Yet another reason I'm hope to move back to Carroll Gardens before too long. Damn depressing Greenpoint!
thanks jen h. that is counterintuitive...and disturbing.
"Gothamist thinks the rapist is one gutsy mofo..."
yours is a disgusting and shameful characterization of a weak, cowardly criminal.
Yep, that's pretty disgusting to characterize a rapist as "one gutsy mofo." Sure, cause it's gutsy to use your dick as a weapon against a defenseless stranger at her workplace, doing permanent damage to another human being. Real gutsy.
I LIVE IN THAT NEIGHBORHOOD AND THE WHOLE MAIN FACT ABOUT THAT NEIGHBORHOOD IS THOSE F@@#@ING COPS SUCK THEY DO AS THEY PLEASE THEY RATHER CHECK OUT ALL THE POLISH GIRLS AND OTHER PRETTY GIRLS INSTEAD OF DOING THEIR JOBS WE NEED NEW COPS THAT WANNA DO THEIR JOBS !!!
I am very disturbed that this keeps happening and I also found it deeply disturbing that the rapist was characterized as "one gutsy mofo." It sounds snarky and trite like you are describing a performance artist or something. Also, I am sure that the victim would not consider "yikes" an appropriate reaction to such a life altering and horrifying event.
I find it very upsetting that what once was a safe neighborhood is now becoming unsafe. There have been alot of crimes over the last few weeks and all within in blocks of the 94th Precient. I think the residents here should get together and find out why the crime in this area is on the rise and what our local police are doing about it.
