The Attempted Seize At Governor's Island

Gothamist was wrapped up in a little election coverage yesterday, but we did notice the story of the man who tried to seize Governor's Island, the former fort, with just a bag full of diving gear and a flag embroidered with "Blue Tulip Nation." [Also reported by Curbed and greg.org]. This is exactly the kind of thing that gets one arrested, which he was by security guards who found him at 7:30AM near Fort Jay. The 41 year-old revolutionary from Virginia, David Nash, refused to tell police where he entered the water though he did say "I'm here to reclaim the land for the Blue Tulip Nation"; Blue Tulip Nation has been around since 1999, but Nash is the only member. Of course, Nash was taken to Bellevue for psychological examinations. Gothamist loves how Newsday writes, "Nash provided the authorities no more information on the group or his ideologies."

We can understand why Nash would want to seize Governor's Island - it's a lovely place to visit. Check out visits to Governor's Island from callalillie and our own Joe. Get blue tulips from Holland.

  • hey, i didn't know my boyfriend was in the newspaper. that barely visible tattoo says "i love margaret," btw. sigh.

Yeah, he did try to "seize" the island. He's a lone nut with no weapons who swam in the river and hoisted a flag. Whoop dee do. He did nothing. There are more dangerous folks taking craps on city streets as we type this. While unique, this incident is no big deal. Nobody was harmed.

Also, I pointed out Jake because Jake has put out many requests for info on how to tresspass onto pieces of private property for his photographic excursions. Most recently he's requested info on how to tresspass onto a Red Hook pier to take pics of a sugar refinery.

So on the one hand, this guy who goes out to Governors Island and tresspasses deserves to be arrested. But on the other hand, a photoblogger like Jake or that Satans Laundormat guy tresspasses and that's excusable?

It's a double standard. Plain and simple.

God, I hope your just being Silly...

    In case your not:

Well, Um, he *DID* try to seize the island...

You don't think scuba diving to the Island, "reclaiming" it for the "Blue Tulip Nation" is exactly the kind of thing to get one Arrested?

Perchance, could it actualy be he was a Danger to Himslef??

Also, When did Jake Trespass on Private Property?

"Gothamists values are quite conservative when you come down to it."??

Ok, I'll bite: What have you ever done, oh Radical Dude??

"This is exactly the kind of thing that gets one arrested..."

Gothamist, can you be even more school marmish and pseudo-conservative. This guy is nuts, but arrested? C'mon! He did nothing to harm anyone.

By your logic then all of the "cool" pictures posted by Blue Jake trespassing on private property should get him arrested as well. And that Satans Laundromat where the guy tresspasses into closed Subway stations. He should be arrested as well.

Gothamists values are quite conservative when you come down to it.

  • Is this the beginning of the secessionist movement? :>)
