Coolfer's Slightly Hung Over Music Picks

Yeah, I'm pretty sure there are some shows coming up. Lemme collect myself...

The Unicorns...Who will cut their hair when they're gone? You want to see a different--but good--live show? Hit the Bowery Ballroom tonight to see The Unicorns (pictured). Ashlee Simpson-like they ain't. And they're Canadian, so maybe you can marry one of them and get that free healthcare after all!

A really cool show would have been Beans and Jimmy Edgar (all you IDM fans, you've gotta check out his upcoming EP). Alas, Rothko has gone Volume on us and has a slight problem because of its downstairs DJ room (or so go the rumors). Shows are being cancelled, bands are finding new gigs and hipsters all across the LES are walking around aimlessly, iPod in hand, confused, pondering a new alligiance to The Delancey or The Canal Room. Don't fret. The club's website has shows running from the 12th through December. Maybe they'll pull it together.

Any Broken Social Scene fans out there? No, not them. They're playing next month. In the meantime, we get two shows by Apostle of Hustle, a BSS side project helmed by BSS guitarist Andrew Whiteman. There's a show Thursday at Tonic and another Friday in The Hook.

For those of you who either (a) want to stroll down industrial's memory lane or (b) are one of the faithful few who still listen to industrial, your show of the week is probably Skinny Puppy at Webster Hall on Friday.

On Friday the Hammerstein hosts The New Life Project Concert featuring Kanye West, Common, Musiq and the X-Ecutioneers. It's a benefit for homelessness...hard to say how good or bad this show will be, but it may be worth a shot. It's a good cause, and tickets ($35 to $37.50) are as cheap as you're going to find for a benefit at a large venue in NYC.

If you missed The Futureheads' show at the Canal Room last night (no, that's not why I'm hung over) you can see them at Maxwell's on Saturday. This is one damn recommended show. Coolfer caught them at Rothko a few months ago at their headlining show (that followed their show supporting Franz Ferdinand at the Roseland). Great band, great live show.

Anglophile concert alert! Muse is playing Webster Hall on Tuesday. The Zutons are opening. Should be a good show. Get there early for The Zutons--they're a lot of fun.

Canadian healthcare sucks! It's free but it's worth shit. Long waits, lackluster care, bans on the latest medicines. The answer is to unregulate US healthcare: get pharms w/out a prescription, not require MDs to have a license, allow more med schools so we have more doctors. The answer is less control. Not more controls. My friends have friends in the UK who are afraid to take their children to a doctor. Still want free healthcare? It would be like going to get a checkup at the DMV. Everyone talks about the free! free! free! No one mentions the quality of the care and the wait times. Canada pushes the cost of care on to the consumer in non-financial ways by making the consumer wait. And then only providing shitty care.
