Election Hangover: We Still Don't Have A President

2004_11_electresultsnot.jpg

Okay, we sorta have an idea of who the President will be next year. It's just that the media won't say so definitively, and by Jove, if the media isn't saying it, who are we to disagree? Who knew that Florida would seem pretty well-run, next to Ohio? There's one thing that Gothamist is sure of on this day after the 2004 Election: If NYC wants to secede (Kerry carried New York, as expected), the rest of the Northeast and West Coast, plus a pocket in the Midwest, would be interested in seceding with us. What else can we say? Internets polls, you tried to help us by giving us information, but your models were flawed. People are blaming the young people for not coming out in droves for Kerry (though it was too assumptive to think they'd all vote for him - Republicans start somewhere) but we feel that's a little premature, not to mention seeing footage of people on line at Kenyon College in Ohio, for hours and hours, so screw that. Credit is being given to the Republicans for mobilizing their evangelical base to cast their vote to oppose issues like gay marriage, abortion, and stem cell research, which makes us foresee gay marriage/abortion/social issue parties in the future. A wise friend attempted to put it in perspective for us, "Basically, there are just over 5 people who wanted Bush...and almost 5 wanted Kerry." Oy.

The NY Times' Election 2004 coverage. Also, CNN's America Votes page. And Gothamist loved the Washington Post's Channel Surfer that showed what times the networks would call states.

Gothamist will have more thoughts on NYC's Election Day, but some other national highlights: DCist looks at Senate and House races. Seems like the Republicans will remain in control of the Senate. Senator Charles Schumer won reelection by a huge margin. Barack Obama won a seat in the Senate for Illinois, but Tom Daschle lost his - that tells you the Democratic party is doing something really wrong, when the Senate Minority Leader loses his seat.

i'm completely dismayed by the fact that this country has been hijacked by populist ideology -- one which bases it's policies on non-critical and irrational ideologies. sad fuckin day to realize that these douchebags will be deciding our fate over the next four years.

they will eventually self implode, but not before this nation is brought to its hands and knees and becomes only a shell of what it once was.

For the blue U.S. states He (capitalized for his holy status) is not our president, and never will be. We are indeed two seperate countries sharing only a common name, and hardly "united". It is now we who feel that we need to be liberated from an opressive theocratic regime. Will the EU be willing to return the favor and welcome our huddled masses with open arms?

  • The Truth

You idiots don't realize that this country is controlled (population numbers) by Middle America. In other words, we in the "civilized" NE (and Cali) are a minority. Is that so surprising?

  • Associated Press is reporting that Kerry has conceeded to Bush. Now, this does not technically mean that the Ohio votes are 100% counted yet. But hey, it could mean we're all as confussed as anyone else.

If when the dust settles Bush does win, the campaigns to have him impeach should start in earnest. Enough of all of this shit. Bush does not deserve office and impeachment is the only way to get him out of office.

This obviously part of a vast Right Wing Conspiracy to undermine the electoral process and install Fascists to positions of power.

Yeah thats usually the reason for this.

Another Reason is that when Dem's headed to the polls, they voted to oust Bush, not to Elect Kerry. Bush is not unpopular enough for the Dems to get away with that Logic. Kerry wasnt as strong a candidate as we hoped. But Ohio still hangs in the balance. Keep Hope Alive

Daschle's loss by less than 5,000 votes in a bipolitical state (kept voting Republicans for President while returning him to the Senate, Bush had a 60-38 lead yesterday) doesn't indicate that the Democrats did anything wrong; it indicates how heavily invested the GOP was in getting him out, with unprecedneted levels of national support for Thune...and some allegations of Native American voter intimidation so serious a federal judge had to heavily restrict the activities of GOP poll challengers in the state.

This election has me severely depressed. While we knew it was going to be close, I can't believe it that the right met the energized democratic base and met the new voters 1:1. I haven't been this depressed since 9/11.

Man, this really brings into focus the Two Americas. I look at the hotly contested (or, worse, far into Bush majority) and I can't help but have this uncharitable thought about my fellow Americans: "Who ARE you dumb fucking hicks?! Seriously, you think things are going great and you want to 'stay the course'?" (I can say this b/c I am, unfortunately, from OH.) I half-seriously want blue and red to split up. Leave the dumb hicks to heaven, I say.

Likely reason for the shortage of young people voting: GTA San Andreas. Screw Rockstar.

  • By no means is it over. Though it doesn't look too good, we'll see if the Kerry campaign has the stomach to fight while they bide time waiting for Ohio.

  • Badger

Wow, glad that all that RNC protesting we argued about here a couple months ago turned out to be so useful.

Fox News online has Bush 269 Electoral Votes and John Kerry at 242.
